Why you can't torque anything with a crush washer

****, this is what happens when I get on the Elliptical Trainer too late at night. I have so much energy I think it is a good idea to get a big glass of wine & cruise the FJR Forum. I just realized I have been talking to myself for about a half hour now.

Sure, crush washers are easy-peasy..
But what about wave washers?
Having rebuilt a number of motorized valve actuators over the years when I worked in the nuclear industry I can tell you that you ignore torque specifications at your own peril. The case of the oil drain plug torque spec being wrong was one of the very few instances I have come across where the factory messed up. There was a correction made and ideally you should be using the new value.

The problem is most folks either don't own a torque wrench or never had it calibrated. If you are one of those folks that have a clicker style torque wrench and don't back off the torque setting before storing the wrench it doesn't take long before the torque wrench is way off in its calibration. In that case you are probably better off just going righty-tighty and hope for the best.

Harder to get the right value by "feel" since you never know the sweet spot.
Huh?

I find it extremely easy to find the sweet spot when tightening with a fresh crush washer.

Perhaps you need to go back and repeat kindergarten?

and you can tell valve clearances by just looking at them with your calibrated eyeball. You're my hero.

After 38 years of living and breathing, I thought I knew a sweet spot. Then I got married and after three years there ain't no sweet spot...in fact, apparently I know nothing about anything(according to me wife). Tighten it til it's tight and yer good to go.
Try turning her over . . . < well intentioned joke. < never mind, I just noticed that Chuck35 got here before me, and with some greater degree of articulation. Nice straight man job though odot
