O, Woe is me!!
I have a P89 9mm that I bought, basically because it was cheaper than the Beretta, and I had a magazine comparo that rated it better. As for 9mm vs .45, at the time I was of the mind that load capacity was more important that power. It's still kinda fun to blast 16 times at the range once in a while, and count dollar signs per clip.
One of the things the magazine did, for whatever reason, was tap the barrel and plug it with a bolt, then they fired it. The pin holding the ejector broke, was repaired, and the gun was still servicable. I don't know what the threads in the barrel did for accuracy, though!

Ive been thinking about getting a gun for the house...but then I thought there was a better chance of my wife shooting me than an intruder. So I opted not to get a gun.

How about something a little creative, but still in the neighborhood?
First, a LARGE, no, make that HUGE box. In this box, place the gift(s). I would get some silly crap, some sexist crap (edible undies), perhaps even a toy gun and the toy badge/cuffs. Some real handcuffs (but that is for later...) and then the big-ass gift certificate from the bang-bang store. Of course, that one is hidden in the box in such a way that just prior to finding, she believes you are a total jerk that has lost his mind. Then you get to make an 'event' out of choosing the gun together. (You'll also get to use the cuffs.)

She loved it, but was frustrated that the scabbard wouldn't go with any of her work suits.
There's no safety, I just hide it when she's drunk.

I'm not a cop either, but I am a person who used to shoot 50K+ rounds of hand gun ammo per year, and I have shot every gun you listed.
As others have said, there is A LOT of personal preference when it comes to which gun is best.
I would personally say the Springfield XD is the way to go, but that is because I like it best.
I would NOT go with the Ruger auto's, since I have always had function problems with them. S&W auto have traditionally been POS's, but I know they are getting better.
If you would like, I can get you in personal contact with two of the head firearm instructors for the CPD, who I shoot with, and are both EXCEPTIONAL in their firearms knowledge.

Not having enough guns is bad. If you have more guns that pets in your house you should be OK as a rule of thumb. I like to try to have at least a 8 gun to each pet ratio. Better safe than sorry.Guns are bad.
Now I just need to get that Class 3 permit when I move up to WI, so I can have the full auto stuff. Full auto might be even more fun that the twisties on a good bike.

I haven't read any of the replies, but will when I am done.
When I transitioned from a Smith and Wesson 9mm to a Glock 9mm in 1991, I heard all the commotion about how Glocks were worthless. While they have had some problems (ie: the KaBoom factor in their large frame weapons), to ME, as an 18 year cop who has served pretty much every part of police work and has been involved in too police shootings, there is no better combat weapon than a Glock. There are certainly better weapons, certainly more accurate weapons, certainly safer weapons for home use, no doubt. But for a combat weapon, it is amazing. Drop it in mud, pick it up and pull the trigger, it fires. Drop it in sand, pick it up and pull the trigger, it fires. Drop it on the concrete during a struggle, pick it up and pull the trigger, it fires.
It has enough tolerances built in that most debris will not cause it to fire like many, more precise weapons. It is rugged, has a built in safety system that is perfect for law enforcement, but not so much the home. With the Smith and Wesson we had, if you dropped it, the magazine release safety would break and the gun would be nothing better than a boat anchor. We had an officer here who had a Sig's trigger spring break after his first round in a shootout with a bank robbery suspect. Once that spring broke, the gun was useless.
With a Glock, for combat purposes, it is hard to beat.

I am not sure what the sights are made of, but at night they glow so you can see the sights in the dark. Her current duty issued weapon should have night sights, so she should be familiar with them.

Thats what I was hoping you meant. Usually the ones you speak of have Tritium sights, same as most military equipment that requires viewing at night, compasses for one. I am the King of Useless info!
Sounds like Glocks are the preferred weapon here, so far.

For combat use, it is hard to beat. For home protection, accuracy shooting, etc, it would not be a first choice.

I thought after the North Hollywood shootout, cops were favoring the .40 or .45 ACP over the 9mm.
