Will an off-duty sheriff ticket me if I ride with him?

A little anecdote from my checkered past involving riding with LEOs....

A couple of years back, I had to go from Central Florida up to the Panhandle to do a High School football game play-by-play.

About 5 miles from the office, on my FJR, I came up on two police cars running fairly quickly headed north. Both cars were Perry, Florida police units. They were brand new, purchased at a local dealership in the town where I work (BIG fleet dealer) apparently headed "home".

Taking U.S. 98, a straight shot from Lakeland to Perry, these boys were cookin'.....90-110 mph every time the road "opened up".

I stayed RIGHT on their bumpers for the entire 200 miles. Took us just a tad less than 2 hours to get there. I knew they couldn't touch me, since they were local LEOs far from home.

Best "road trip" I've ever done, time/speed/distance-wise, on daylight, public roads. I even "teased" them to run faster, but they wouldn't. But tucked in behind a couple of out-of-jurisdiction LEOs haulin' the ton for the better part of 200 miles was quite the amusement.

When we DID hit their town limits, they both peeled off at at truck stop and pulled in RIGHT BEHIND me, just DARING me to go over the local limit.

I think I pissed 'em off by going through town 10 under. :)

LOTS of open highway on the ROUTE WE RAN.

my son-in-law is a cop ,, I know / friends with a lot of cops..

and if I get a ticket ,, there's probably a hundred times I didn't get one and should have..

But what REALLY pisses me off ,, Is when some cop drives down the freeway at the posted

speed limit or even a 1 mph under and has a string of car behind him like it's a funeral procession.

My daughter ( her husband is a LEO) passed one doing this ,, he pulled her over and ask her, "if she was

dicking with him"...

The only lame traffic stops I've ever had were:

Once got pulled over for not turning my turn signal on soon enough,,,( I figured the smokey was having a bad day)

The other was doing 72 MPH in a 65 zone ( freeway , dry road , no traffic , smokey stopped on side of the road) ,,

" the reason I pulled you over is, you went pass me at 72 and Didn't Even slow down,,,

you would think that a expensive car like this would have a cruise control.." ( new black caddy)..

Both were just warnings,,, actually thought they were kind of funny ,,

I wanted to say , "you pulled me over for WHAT ??!" but didn't,, ( back to the 100 times I should have and didn't

get a ticket)

I respect most cops ,, they have a job to do ,,, some do a good job ,, some don't...

Ride with LEO's just like anybody else ,,, they put their pants on the same way everybody else does..

( well ,, except for the gun and badge)

Ask the group that went to the 2008 N. Ga. weekend at Suches...

When where you all up in Suches? I was up there Saturday 4/3 and did see a couple of FJR's hauling *** past TWO. I however was on the Dual Sport at the time and didn't run into them again that day.
This was last October; but I'm up there whenever I can on weekends.

If you wanna know what a cop will do to another cop, look at what they do to the average "civilian" and turn it 180°.
remember the old joke about the shark not eating the lawyer because of professional courtesy...
Not necessarily.

I was stopped by a major city PD for 15 over on a 6 lane interstate, and took my ticket and paid it. I didn't badge him, and he didn't offer, even though it was obvious I worked for the state, since the photo on my driver's license had me in uniform.

He knew, I knew, and he knew I knew that he knew... I was wrong, and he was doing his job.

I sucked it up, paid the fine and took 3 years to get the full 2 points off my license.

Plus, over 30 years, I wrote my share of LEOs.

Stuff happens.
