Will I Get Banned For Talking About Dex-Cool?

I was looking the the article called ******* for the FJR and it recommends Dex-Cool so I went out and purchased some. When I was adding coolant I noticed that it was orange and I was suddenly concerned because I remembered something about orange coolant issues.

So I began googling and OMG there are horror stories a plenty and much of it is urban legend I'm sure. When I checked the ingredients of the Dex-Cool it has the exact same ingredients as my bottle of normal silicate free, add to anything coolant and both are EG based. I wonder if they slowly changed the formula since the days when people were having issues?

So how long will it take the inside of my radiator to turn into pecan pie filling? I flushed well before adding the orange stuff.

You're funny!

I have no idea about Dex-Cool. All I know is that I use the Honda Pre-Mix coolant. It may be a bit pricey, but it's readily availalbe and has *zero* hassle factor. In fact, I follow Jestal's recommendation and don't *flush* the system, but simply drain it and re-fill using the Honda whale ****.

I think that since you used Dex-Cool your FJR is going to blow up.

:D

I use Motul Motocool Expert. It's premixed.... Change the coolant everytime I have the valves checked.... 5 years 152,000kms... Can't tell you if it any good or not

I have changed my coolant three times (I have an '04), each time withDexcool approved coolant; no problems.

I have had Dex-Cool in my fjr the last two years with no problem and have used it in a fleet of vehicles (15) for the last 10 years with no problems. Works for me.

Two flushes in 40K. The Cobalt Cooker gets Yamacool for cool juice. Hasn't exploded yet.

Another satisfied user of Honda pre-mixed coolant in all the scoots. Way too many complaints concerning heads gasket problems and first hand knowledge of a failed intake gasket (which the General refused to pay for) has me running away from this stuff... YMMV

No experience in my bikes. No way, no how.

Had it in my 97 Blazer, that required the cooling system back flushed no less than 4 times. One of those times built up enough pressure to pop a freeze plug in an attempt to push out the pudding.

The only people I recommend it to are people I don't like.

Coolant?

We supposed to change it?

I've never touched it on my 03.

Never changed it in 12 years on my last bike, an FJ1200.

Come to think of it, that was air cooled right? That could explain it.

I guess a drain and fill might be in store this spring for my Feee Jr.

I'll definately be using a premix coolant, like that Prestone yellow stuff.

I wouldn't let Dex-Cool get anywhere near any of my vehicles. The Car Doctor, Ron Ananian, with the syndicated radio show, says basically the the minute the factory warranty is up, get that stuff out of your engine. It's ok as long as there are no cooling system leaks. Once air gets into the system, DexCool becomes acidic and can eat up little things like head gaskets and manifolds. It also clogs the radiator.

I really believe that my old Toyota 4 Runner engine was destroyed by Dex Cool as well as a neighbors 96 Olds V6 which had about a qt of oil in the cooling system. I suspected a head gasket, turned out it was the intake manifold which was eaten up. (I didn't know the int. manifold had oil and coolant running thru it but that's what a GM mechanic found.)

If you Google "Dex Cool" you will find 250,000 sites dealing with it, many of them not good. I use the regular stuff in my FJR and change it every 2 years.

You all may also want to consider the Toyota red fluid. It is recomended for all aluminum engines. It does not have any of the nasty silicates that may cause damage to water pump seals. Also as indicated on the jug, does not contain any Borates that may cause corosion or pitting in aluminum.

It is available in several formulas rated at 50k miles and 100k miles for later model vehicles. Both of these obviousley exceed the 2yr / 24k change interval of the Fjr.

Dex-cool

Oh man, I've owned two Cadillac STS's, with the 300+ horse power Northstar. Both motors died from head gasket issues, hell I even blow up one motor using that stuff. The damn thing went high order, parts all over the place. Dex-cool, no way, never again. A lot of good that law suit will work for me.

My 2006 Chevy 2500HD has that crap in it. The color changes with age, not pretty pink like it used to be, and I know pretty pink.

Good luck to you that use it. If it don't say Yamaha it ain't going in the motor, period.

Another firm "NO" on the use of Dex-Crap. I've seen way too many problems from customers' cars bleeding orange.

0 problems seen with Honda mix. All the old green stuff still works just fine, too, but I do like the Prestone Extended Life Coolant. This is NOT the orange stuff, but a fluorescent green color that is also compatible with ALL colors and brands of coolant. It's always difficult to get all the old coolant out of any system so adding this stuff takes the worry out of creating any harmful chemical reaction.

What's strange is that I have a bottle of this too and it has the EXACT same ingredients as my bottle of Prestone Dex-Cool. So, it makes me wonder if the formula has been changed over time.
