Hi everyone!

Well, I picked up my new 08' FJR in Atlanta yesterday and trailered it home. Shortly after dark, my windshield must have blown off (i.e. broken) the bike! Yikes!! The outer plastic piece was, surprisingly, laying under the bike in the trailer when we stopped for gas. The side tabs on the piece are intact, but the lower two tabs are broken. And, of course, the shield itself was long-gone.

Anyone know what parts / part numbers I need to purchase from Yamaha so I can install the summer shield? They still had the winter shield installed. And, does anyone find it strange that the windshield blew off the bike from being trailered? The bike was facing the same direction as the car. I've trailered bikes on this trailer for years without any issues. We did notice in the rear-view mirror the windshield rattling/shaking a bit more than expected, but I would have never guessed that it would literally break the mounts and blow off.

I'm sure I'll be asking a ton of questions on the forum to get acquainted with my new FJR!

Thanks for any help!

Try looking here for part numbers etc. Don't let this get you down too much. You're going to love this fantastic machine. :clapping:

Once you determine what parts you need, post the list in the Classified Ads - Wanted on the this great forum and you might very well find everything you need at a much reduced price. You're going to love this place. :yahoo:

Congrats on the purchase...never have heard of loosing a windshield before. Lots of great information here, beginning with the bin-of-facts.

Enjoy the new ride, you won't be disappointed!

Bad luck. Since it was a new bike I'm thinking the set-up guys who worked on your bike didn't install the fasteners correctly.

Somewhere in this forum there's a link to how to remove the "W" that fastens the windshield - I used it myself when I wanted to do a thorough cleaning on my "new" 'o6 I bought last month.

Enjoy the new ride!

Thanks saxman. That's exactly what I'll need as the "W" was all that was left - but appears to have broken tabs. I'll do a search on the forum for the instructions.

Woodsie, I'd ditch the stock windshield and replace it with something else (like a Vstream). You can probably find stock winshields all day long on ebay or here, as they are the most frequently replaced stock thing besides the tires.

Should not have blown off, vary strange. Something was not right for sure. Replacing it is a vary easy job. Congrates on the new bike and yes you will love it

And, does anyone find it strange that the windshield blew off the bike from being trailered?

I've had to trailer my '05 a couple times recently and noticed, what seemed to me, an abnormal amount of windshield vibration/shake. There is no sign of this when I'm riding it.

My towing vehicle is a full-size GMC p/u with cap and I believe the turbulence from the truck is what's affecting the w/w so much. The excessive vibration could easily break one. I will probably run a couple pieces of duct tape from the w/w to the bars to help stabilize it if I have to tow again.

Any chance something hit the windscreen while rolling, like maybe a bird or something? The plastic screws that are used to mount the windscreen are intended to break and let the windscreen come loose in a crash.

I can't, for the life of me, see how anyone can buy a bike and not ride it home (assuming there's no frozen precipitation on the ground). Nope, I just couldn't do it.

Trailers are for boats, the FJR knew this, and demonstrated it's dislike for the situation. <_<

I'm going with turbulence behind the tow vehicle getting wind behind the windshield. It makes a lousy parachute.

When I dragged Frank to the Reno WFO, I removed the windshield shortly after starting for this very reason. The W/S was wiggling like a pole dancer on meth at 70mph.

This was a warning, FJR's are not supposed to be trailered, they don't like it, and never will... The road grimlins had their way with her, and it make take several very long rides to shake them off. :angry2: Remember this was only a warning, next time it will be worse.

I picked up my new '10 a month ago from a dealer 315 miles away and trailered it home as well. My only casualty was my gas mileage. Hemi + towing + mountains = $$$

A week later I installed my new rifle windshield to discover one of the tabs on my W was also broken. No idea if it came that way or I did it. I called my local dealer and the parts guy had not problem identifying the part. It was about $80 for a new one.

Rifles' installation instructions on their website show how to remove and install the windshield mask.
