When I turned the bike on tonight the winshield started to raise without pushing the up/down switch. I hit the switch a couple of times, turned the key on/off a coupleof times and it now seems fine. Any thoughts if this is the switch or the relay?

Try cleaning the switch first.
If it doesn't help,I am very afraid the problem probably is in the windshield motor..Exactly like this or sometimes the auto retract didn't working or when you rise it up it didn't goes down, happening and to me..Αfter a detailed search and info from many others confirmed that all these odd gremlins due to the black box on the motor where there are a problematic microswitch.Yamaha knows the problem and now they sells a new part number motor..Have a look:

Old part number 5jw-83306-00

New part number 5jw-83306-01

A post from their website:

What are Superseded Parts?

Commonly parts are superseded by a newer version of the item with main reason being quality improvement.

Please note that the actual shape or colour of the item may slightly deviate from the original design.

If you definitely do not want to receive any superseded items, simply do not order these.

You can identify an item being superseded by studying the product details. If you are unsure if an item is superseded, please contact our sales team for assistance.

Ps.

The bad thing is that this motor cost over of 500$

And if someone will buy it from e-bay,99% he will buy the old part number with all these troubles...

Ps 2

All these troubles with the windshield motor are very common almost in all 01/-05 Gen 1 bikes..I think the admins should to pin it somewhere..

Every once in a while, when I shut the bike off, my screen stays in position. But I've had no other issues on my 05.

My windshield has stayed in position at shut off. I hasn't gone up by itself though. Were you rubbing the windshield beforehand?

Rob

Rubbing it? I call it polishing

Gen 2 and Gen 1 windshield motors have no similarity whatsoever.

The GenI is a simple motorized jackscrew that pushes the arm upwards or downwards to raise or lower the shield.

The GenII is a Rube Goldberg pulley-and-cable system that belongs on a construction crane somewhere.

Sounds like you've got a sticky switch. My four way flasher sticks... when I accidently push the button, I can't get them to shut off. Gotta push it a hundred times to get it to release. So I just don't use it. Anyway, Ya might try pulling the switch housing apart and making a back yard attempt at disassemling that switch and/or spraying it out with contact cleaner. Of course, another switch from a wrecked Gen 1 will work, and no doubt they are NOT in high demand, so there should be some around. Maybe try the want ads here on the forum?

Relays don't normally do what you just described. Their typical problem is that they DON'T work when you hit the switch to apply voltage to them. Also, It's nearly impossible for them to pick up stray voltage from other sources. Two wires shorting together to do this is rare unless you've been in a accident or someone's been doing some really weird things under your tupperware.

His problem was different than mine.

With mine, I went for a 2 hr ride with the windshield up. When I got there, I noticed the N light stayed lit. I also noticed the windshield didn't auto-retract. Took the 2 hr ride home with the windshield down. When I got home, the N light wasn't on. I tried raising the shield and turning it off and it auto-retracted. I noticed while auto-retracting that the N light stayed on until it was the whole way down. So, I was unable to replicate the problem.

I'll clean the switch and then disconnect the auto-retract if it doesn't help.

The problem believe me is the microswitch, where it is on the motor and nobody until now has tried to repair or replace it...

Believe it or not, the neutral light's 12V source is the windshield motor assembly. If the bike's in neutral, the N light will be on as long as the windshield drive is powered up. It shuts itself off after retracting, but if it's mechanically jammed and can't move, it never retracts, and the neutral light stays on.

If the jumper is removed, it shuts itself off with the key.

I'm no engineer, I've never played one on TV and I didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night...but seriously? We can't do soemthing better than cables and pulleys for the windshield? Oh well, knock on wood, it has never been an issue on my bike and I hope to continue that streak. I've never had the nose off my bike, so I had no idea this is how that works!
