I've got the fairing off my bike for a little winter maintenance (and cleaning) and discovered how the winshield drive works. Has anyone bothered to lube the gears that raise/lower the shield. It is also time to try and take some sideways play out of the the shield mounts. If any of you have already done this please comment.

Had mine apart twice now Scott. I used a dry molly lube as I didn't want dirt and crap building up in there. As far as removing any of the slop? Not to this point, but since it's currently naked again think I might look into that if for only something to do.

Just lube up that threaded rod and it's good to go. Gen-II riders need not apply, your drive is all goofy and complicated with wires and pulleys and ****.

Is this what you had in mind?

All that mess to move a few ounces of plastic.. Engineering musta been feeling left out or bored that day eh?

Let us know what you find with the excessive windshield movement. When I was looking at my '04 windshield drive I could not find one thing that was 'wrong' or 'out of spec'. My windshield wobble was an accumulation of several things being just ever so slightly loose. As a result my ahamaY windshield has a lot of movement.

I will report back. I only really noticed it with the larger V-Stream. Nothing too excessive with the stock shield but I thought it would be a good time to look at it since I have everything apart. I plan to price up new bushings and spacers tomorrow.

Taller shield further from the pivot point(s) = more movement.

Timely post as mine is going into dealer today to see what is wrong with it before the YES runs out. The problem is at speeds of 60 and above, (with the big shield on) it won't go up. You can see the right side try to go up, but the left appears to be binding, so it jams and won't move unless I help it along by pushing up the left side. And the rubber gasket is not in there to bind.

I'll see what they say and post up. At least I need to get it documented before 3/12 when the YES runs out.

Like you'd know anything about working on a Gen-II bike!
I DO know what to avoid.....anything built by Yamaha with a 1298cc motor, full fairings and side bags built after 2005! :p :p
Sure...Cuz my bike built after 2005 still has the crappy original motor in it  . Not like those Gen I bikes with the motor from another year or bike in them  . Those guys with replacement motors are really cool :p . Too bad they smell like poop.
