I noticed one missing on my used 2005 so I went to tighten the rest and broke one. I was shocked to find out they were plastic. Can they be replace with steel?

Yup, been done many times. I'd suggest stainless steel (Available at most True Value-Ace hardware-Home Depot-Lowes, etc.) since exposure to water will likely produce unsightly rust.

Lion,

Here is a case study for not being recommended:

https://www.fjriders.com/forum/showpost.php...amp;postcount=1

"It appears the windshield hit the helment (full face) around the mouth area, slid up and pushed the visor up and the edge of the windshield hit the bridge of my nose. The restricted opening of the helment kept much else from happening and the plastic screws sheared at that point"

Metal screws would create a whole different story....

Bad idea to replace with metal. They are nylon on purpose. They are designed to break during a collision so that the windshield does not become a guillotine.

Search this way in google to find the answer to your questions:

MM2, really? Or was this a misread on your part? Hugs n' Kisses

Edit - stay with plastic, IMHO.

Yeah, god forbid you put stainless steel screws in there! After all, the plastic screen is soo much stronger than the plastic screws.

I've had the plastic screws break and the stainless steel ones not. Both times the windscreen itself broke.

Close your visor and ride happy. :yahoo:

Ok, good points...and thanks for the search tip! So do you get them from bikebandit (I found them there) or is there a prefered place?

I guess my next question would be...if you are riding along a 65 mph and hit a bird is the windshield going to end up coming off into your face?

Never happened before. In fact, it's been demonstrated multiple times to stay intact even with a bird strike at a buck plus. No reason to think it should come off.

However, if you take a header off the bike....the windshieldcome off nicely as demonstrated several forum members and not one jugular has been severed. ;)

Those Yamaha engineers are bright folks. They're designed that way for a reason.....and only real problems seems to be misunderstanding when people over torque them and snap them off.

This has all been discussed many, Many, MANY, MANY times before including this thread.

Thanks Ignacio, it's good to know it's been tested and won't come off with a bird hit! :clapping: Came close to finding out first hand this weekend.

And the over torque thing...yeah, found that out the hard way last night <_<
