Locals trampled him -- trying to get warm.

(Hey. I don't write 'em. I just pass 'em along. Thanks, Niehart.)

But seriously, are any of you PNW or Western Canada hosers planning to attend any of the events?

Why not?

Even though I live nowhere near the venue, that's pretty much EXACTLY how I feel.

Not going, wouldn't go, not watching them on TV either (well, maybe hockey).

I think the best quote I ever heard regarding the Olympics was by an analyst on one of the Canadian sports networks, who said something like "I really don't give a damn about the olympics; with the exception of hockey, if they were holding the games in my backyard, I'd close the curtains".

That pretty much sums up how I feel about the olympics... a lot of sports that nobody gives a crap about for 3 years and 11 months at a time, and then everyone goes nuts for a few weeks. Not to take anything away from the athletes, but the sports themselves aren't spectator sports, and no one (well, almost no one) cares.

To bad.. Like everything else now days, To commercialized!!

And some of the new sports? Gimme a break.

Anymore the Olympics are just like a carnival/cattle drive. Just an excuse to get drunk and wreck ****.

Oh, don't forget about livestock sex Michael  :blushing:

Is that livestock sex a new sport? Wanna do a tag team Barry, huh? huh? :yahoo:

Guess I'll be the contrarian here. I frigging love the Olympics. All of it. It's on my bucket list to attend someday, but I'd rather see the Summer Games as opposed to the Winter. I'd like someday to buy one of those "all event" passes and go see any and everything I have interest in.

Not to be too rosey about the whole thing (I'm really sickened by doping and cheating, and the "X" sports belong in their own format, not the Olympics), but I will never forget so many amazing moments from the Olympics.

You're right, no one cares about many of these sports except every four years. And that's one of the great things about it! The novelty, the fresh faces, the new things to learn about. It's not like bloody basketball with it's 200 game season or whatever... ridiculous.

I still remember - at 12 years old -

and my father and I cheering the television. And Miracle. We were "there" watching with the rest of our country in the last real triumph for American hockey, and inarguably one of the greatest moments in sports history.
These stories every single Olympic Games (even though the TV coverage always overplays the fluff.) And as all things with sports, you never know how things will turn out.

Did you see any of the opening ceremonies from Beijing? I mean, wow. If you missed it, especially watching on an HD screen, you missed a truly amazing human accomplishment. We will never see another human spectacle quite like it again. (Admittedly, it reminded me subtly, uncomfortably of a Leni Riefenstahl film..)

Call me a sucker for it.. whatever. I love watching nearly everything about the Olympic games.

I enjoy them and try to catch some, Bob Sled, Speed Skating & that crazy one where they go face first down the Bob Sled track on a flexible flier are cool to watch. My wife lives to see Figure Skating.

I heard rumor it was going to be, till the Arizona contingent wanted to include Gilas an' imported Armadillos.

Sadly, it's going to be another four years :( a fukin' cryin' shame I tell ya...

I'm kind of down with Zip on the O's. You can take a guy or gal who's the very best in the world at some obscure sport, and for a couple of days, this guy's a local hero. I've pretty much given up on professional sports in the states. If you look in the sports pages, it's all about who had a gunfight with who, who's cheating on his spouse, who got another DUI, who's on strike for more money--and on and on and on.

OTOH, the politics of the Olympics can be pretty sickening. Like watching how all the judges from certain countries pass out their scores based on who are their friends and allies and who they hate (usually us. What's that about?) But for the young athletes, I like to watch them competing for the joy of it, and kind of celebrate along with them. Why I like the NCAA tournament, but hate the NBA.

By the way, in the Winter Olympics, I'm partial to the snowball throw. ;)

I wouldn't say NObody cares about those sports. The athletes who are busting their ***** trying to qualify for the Olympics care.

And I care 'cause I want the USA to kick every other nations' collective ass at every sport!

I love the Olympics. The wife and I are looking at taking a motorcycle trip to the west coast this year and, if at all possible, we're gonna try to head up to Vancouver and check out all the Olympic 'stuff.'

With that said, I don't think there's enough money out there that could get me to actually attend the Olympics. I can't stand large crowds. I avoid concerts like the plague even though I love concerts. The parking lot BS sessions at EOM are about all I can take.

And I agree - keep the Xgames crap outta the Olympics. Buncha damn hippies...
