Would you ABS again?

Just curious as to whether ABS is worth the extra grand?

I've allways had none ABS and have been quite happy with it. Is ABS the cats meow or should I consider saving the dough and stay with none ABS?

As a NON ABS owner, I cant tell you the difference... But the ABS guys will chime in and say how it saved their ass...

One thing is certain, 2005 was the last year ABS was an option on the FJR. They made it standard 2006 and up.

 
ABSolutely worth it. The second generation system is much more passive (less noticeable) in action, but works great.

Don't know why you would be paying an extra grand. Like GB said, all the new bikes have ABS. Also, on the used market, I haven't seen any price difference because of ABS.

I believe that I can stop in a shorter distance with ABS than I could without, so for me it is worth it. You won't be disappointed in the brakes either way, the Feej can stop in a hurry!

 
Saved my ass just last week. Wet road, person in front of me was cut off. Had to brake hard, the ABS kicked in and I stopped just short of his bumper...theres no doubt in my mind that if i didnt have the ABS I would have slid right into him, or wrecked before I got there.

In 40 years of riding my 06 ABS brakes are the absolute best of any bike I have ever ridden. To those guys who have crashed, don't blame it on the brakes, black cats, or voodoo - look in a mirror and you'll find the answer for the overwhelming number of cases.

 
ABS has probably kept me from dumping on a couple of occassions. Not life threatening situations but dropping the FJR is always an expensive thing. Other than these times I haven't noticed any riding difference with or without ABS. I would get ABS on any bike I bought that had it available but I would still buy a bike where it wasn't available.

I had my the ABS brakes on my truck kick in one time when they should not have and I almost hit the guy in front of me at a toll booth. I was going less than 10 mph and they started working and prevented me from stopping. So I did not get ABS on my FJR. Would be much worse if they failed on a bike when you rely on them to save your life.

 
This is my first bike with ABS and also my first bike with linked brakes. My first thought was "oh great". I was NOT impressed with this technological wonder.

OK, so I've taken it out in the rain and played with the brakes and also played a little slow speed on gravel roads. It's kinda neat how that all works. No complaints. Yamaha did a very good job with the braking system. I take back all the bad things I said about the braking system.

You rely on any brakes to do that and if they failed then what is the difference?

Until you hit the brakes hard enough to actually activate the ABS then you wouldn't even know you had them.

I know what brakes I would want in an emergency stop, that first sudden grab of the brakes in a panic........

 
Love them..if nothing else it gives you more confidence to hit the brakes extremely hard in emergency situations. Love them in my cage as well. Any future bikes I purchase must have abs brakes!

 
I wouldn't want to be on a bike as heavy as the FJR without ABS. Particularly the rear brake. It's not something that is going to save you from all accidents, certainly doesn't help turning on gravel, just stopping.

I think the rear brake is the best part. I have gotton on the rear a little to hard at times, and instead of dragging the tire, you feel the abs kick the brake back up.

If you ride in the rain, I think ABS is a must. Tests have proven that most professional (experienced) motorcyclists can stop on a dry road in a shorter distance without the ABS. However, on wet roads, even the most experienced cyclists cannot stop as quickly without the ABS.

I would have to say it was worth it, 2 saves so far, both involving left turning cagers, imagine that!! If I had grabbed that much brake on my non-ABS bikes, I'm sure it would have been ugly, given the road conditions at the time.

The FJR was my first ABS bike. I would definitely do it again...saved my ass once when it really counted. Choice of ABS or non-ABS, I'd take the ABS for sure.

 
I liked the ABS on my 05. In particular it seemed to help on the rear wheel when slowing to turn off of a bumpy state highway onto a residental road. The turnoff is gravel covered requiring slower than normal speeds. The bumps on the state highway would cause the rear wheel to lock & the ABS minimized that. The 07 also has linked brakes it seems to work even better although I'm not ready to endose it yet as I haven't really had to brake hard on a curve on a wet road (concern about much, if any, braking on the front wheel on a very slick surface in a curve & a resultant low side). The linked system is fairly transparent to the rider under normal riding conditions & is probably a bit better. I never regretted having the linked brakes. Best of luck no matter what you decide.
