Would you buy a "Pre-Owned" 2005 FJR?

If I were to buy pre-owned I would look seriously at an '06, or a very well sorted '07.

mechanically, there's no base reason why not to consider them (as others have said, unless there's something "wrong" with that specific bike). beyond that you'll have to decide how much you want to save (older or newer versions) and if a Gen 2 is worth the higher price (for you).

My father is in need of a new motorcycle and I found a used 2005 with about 5k. Would all the 05 owners recommend it? What issues are there to be aware of? Ticking, etc...

Ok, dumb question.... is he used to only cruisers?

If so, have him go and test ride the bike, or at least one from a dealer.

Mights also depend on how old he is and in what condition...

The FJR is a big bike. If he's used to just putting around town, I'd say no.

If he likes to get from point A to point B efficently and fast, presuming point a and B are a considerable distance apart, then of course!

The FJR is totally useless and as ice cream bike.. unless the ice cream shop is at least a state away! <G>

Oops.... sorry I forgot to mention that I did buy a used 05 in 06 and sold it in 07.... but only because 1. I needed the cash for a house 2. I still have 3 bikes, a Jeep, a motorhome and a bike trailer..... I love the FJR... it's just that it's just a bit too big for me. Riding is fine, backing out of parking spaces isn't.

I bought my 05 about a month ago with 21,000 miles off e-bay. 'Well I did go see and ride before the purchase. Would I do it again, $ell yeah. Now I just need someone to buy my 05 Busa with 5k miles on her. Good luck and don't be scared, if all else find someone that knows something about bikes (hopefully FJR's) go with you to look and ride. FJR's should with proper maintenance go over 100k miles with out any major repairs. Just remember, its a Yamaha and that alone should tell you some quality.

If it has YES for the 4 years (meaning 3 past the basic 1 year), has ABS, and checks out interviewing the seller and doesn't look trashed...I'd do it a second. As my '05 racks up about 70K now...I'm thinking of looking for another low mileage Gen 1 either an '04 or '05 myself.
..then of course...it would be price....but that's a whole other discussion.

Ask the forum member, "Tracy", who bought my used 2005 from the area dealer.

I bought it used off Ebay with 1,200 miles on it. Tracy bought it again almost 18,000 miles later.

Now you must remember that he bought the second-most loved motorcycle in existence, and she still misses me.

Yup, unreservedly. That said, as with any used vehicle, service records and general attitude of owner (squid vs. responsible type) and a close check for repaired crash damage would top my list of things to consider.

How old is dad? How much bike experience? This sucker can get HEAVY in a hurry if leaned too far at parking lot speeds. Otherwise, my '05 is pushing 49K miles with no issues but the need for new suspension...

Yamaha has been taking care of the roughly 10%-15% of '03's - '05's that turned out to be tickers - even beyond warranty.

something old hands learned decades ago is to back into parking spaces so you can pull away under power.

If he takes it out on a test ride and complains of heavy steering, check for low tire pressures. The FeeJee doesn't like the tires under-inflated. Handle like a truck with 32/36 psi. I recommend checking the tires before going out. Should be 38/42 or even 40/42 psi. A flat center section on the rear tire only makes it worse.
