XM Radio for the FJR?

I now have an XM Radio called a 'Roady'. Its no longer made or serviced.

I've had it on my 03 FJR since 2004.

Its going to need to be replaced soon.

The problem is the new XM 'Onyx' has 'cradle' it sits in and, draws its connections for Power and Antenna

off the back of the Onyx radio.

The 'Roady' used a separate 'clip mount' for the back of the receiver.

The R.A.M mount used that clip. The R.A.M. mount was attached to the bikes handle bars.

Then the XM 'clip' was bolted to the R.A.M. and the radio snapped into the clip.

All the cords where attached to the side of the unit (see photos)

I use the XM antenna that runs thru the Zumo 550, all of which runs through a Starcom Advance, and I run my Iphone through the starcom as well for music. Phone works sometimes.

The Zumo screen went on me and I replaced it myself last week, worked perfect for 1 day, now same problem.

I bought a Roady off ebay.

Delphy no longer supports the 'Roady'.

The ebay radio came in a box looking new.

It never has recognised the number (9).

I'm looking for a mount ideas for the XM 'Onyx'.

The Onyx is just like the Express units I use, make a mounting adapter for the cradle. Include some sort of clip to keep the Onyx firmly attached to the base for bumps and wild riding. Also if you remove the unit from the cradle, make sure you cover the cradle to protect it from the rain.

It will cost you some coin, but hands-down the best XM radio for the bike is made by Harley Davidson, and it's waterproof! Mine has been on two bikes, seen snow, ice, rain, and 115+ deg days, 3 countries and 49 states and is still going strong. You may have to fab up a mount, but it's really no big deal. And it has nice big buttons that can be pressed with gloves. LINK

I'm using a R.A.M. ball mount now. Where did you get your mount?

Who makes HD's Radio's? How long are they guarenteed for?

I made my own mount. I used the Universal Bracket from HERE since I had it sitting around. The back of the H-D radio has four bolts coming out of it but they don't match up with any RAM products or the bracket I used. But two of them did so I simply drilled to more to match. Then I drilled two holes that matched up with the screws that hold on the lid of the clutch reservoir and picked up two more longer screws at the hardware store.

I'm not sure who makes the radio. It carries H-D's standard one year warranty. I believe mine is going on about 5 years IIRC.

IIRC there is a wiring harness for power with a connector that's a ways away from the radio (maybe 1-2'). Then they give you a permanent-mount wire to run to power, and another cig lighter plug wire. The antenna connector is proprietary and has plenty of length on it (see the antenna up on my dash). I think the sound cord is about 3' or so and ends with a male end (maybe designed to be plugged into an H-D radio or something with an aux port in). It was too short for my use so I extended it with a female-female adapter and a longer cord to reach my Starcom. The install manual is HERE as a PDF.

I wonder why the HD/XM's are such a secret?

They look like a great way to add XM to any bike.

Maybe they [gasp!] don't want any H-D parts anywhere near their rice-burner. :lol: But seriously, it's not a plug-n-play solution for a bike other than a Harley since you have to fab up a mount, but it is a great receiver. And the mount is not really that hard to make. In fact on my Ultra Classic I didn't like where it was supposed to go so I used one of the numerous brackets that came with it, bent it up to my liking and moved it. Way mo-better.
