I got the chance to take a about a 20 mile ride on a new Yamaha Super Tenere at Bikes Blues & BBQ this weekend in Fayetteville, AR. It seems like a great adventure tour bike. Comfortable and powerful as well. I wouldn't mind having one as a second bike. I could get into riding me some back roads! (I just caught that my topic says road one instead of rode one!) I rode a black one and my buddy rode a blue one.

Just don't drop one with some kind of crash guards - or you won't be going anywhere.
??? Did you mean "without" some type of crash guards?

That's an expensive bike to drop in the middle of the forest. That plastic's gonna rash up good.
There's an integrated plastic crash bar and the guys who've dropped bare bikes found they rashed that piece and the handguards.

There's an Aussie who uses his regularaly as a dirt bike without bars. He says it'snot been a problem as long as he accepts the pieces that are expected to get scratched.

That said, there are about a half dozen vendors of crash bars and I went with theSW-Motech.

Did you see beemerdons' post of AVGeek's tumble that took out the radiator fan? ST had to be towed back.

Ouch...Gotta hate finding out there is an issue like that after it's too late. Seems like it was an easy fix after getting it off the trail though.

I'm definately gonna get me an 800GS with protection on it when the funds allow. There's too many good off-road rides around here and in AZ to be without a bike that can do it.

BTW...You shoulda told me you wanted a KLR. I sold my 2005 for $2400 on August 7th. It was sweet!

What happened to that GS you bought??

If you want an 800 and can live with a chain, there are some great options out there. They'd be better bikes if you will spend more time off road.

But if you can keep just one bike and want a shaft, the choice is currently the GS or S10. Curtain A or curtain B. Yes, the S10 needs some bars and a plate to go off road, no big deal, it's just common sense pre-ride preparation. Both bikes are too heavy to be WR250s. Both run the same size 90-10 tires that slip & slide off pavement.

Today while running a bunch of deeply rutted gravel tracks and some single track paths through the woods, I was more enjoying myself than on a GS. And then I remembered BeemerDon's statement that the bike wasn't tough enough. And laughed as I lifted the front wheel over a fallen tree, landed on the belly plate, and slid off the other side.

Any bike I buy will be a supplement to the FJR. NOT a replacement. If I was going to buy a !200cc bike, it would be a GS-A. The problem with that is the GS-A is just too frigging tall for me.

If I got that big bike off kilter somewhere and stopped, I'd never be able to get back on without dumping it. It is just too much bike.

I don't care about the chain drive on the GS800 because, except for the occasional really long trip, I'll probably only put about 5k a year on the bike. The accessories available for it are almost endless, and it is well proven.

It will do the highway miles I need it to do so that I can ride the off-road miles I want. That was my problem with the KLR. It was really capable off road, but getting there sucked. I want a bike that can do both, and understand there will be compromises both ways.

The FJR will still be here for the comfort, speed and distance...
