Good day ya'll,

Spring is here (sort of). I went out to my garage yesterday and cranked my FJR to begin getting her ready for the season ahead. Cranks fine with lots of juice in the battery but doesn't even attempt to run. Just like you are trying to start a bike with no fuel. (Oddly enough my Ducati started on the first crank....isn't that supposed to be the fickle one?)

My first thought on the FJR is that fuel isn't getting to the engine or a lack of spark. I am not one who ever plays with fuel injection or electrical systems but I am trying to learn to become more self sufficient. Would anyone like to suggest a method by which I can begin to track down the problem. I have no problem with taking it to the dealer but I still would like to use this as an opportunity to learn more. (Later I will resort to that.)

Hope everyone in the northern climes is getting out and enjoying themselves.

Cheers,

gypsy

There are plenty of threads on starting a fickle FJR. You might try the Wide open Throttle technic especially if the ignition has been turned on multiple times or if it was started once and never got out of choke mode.

You just crank with Throttle wide open till it tries to catch. Uses a lot of juice and will probrably run your battery down prior to getting it going though.

Try cycling the ignition key on and off a few times, then give it a shot.

You wouldn't happen to see an error code 19 would you?

Damn Gypsy you've had that bike how long?? Don't you remember them Canook models are programmed not to start till May?

Seriously, I don't know what the issue is but maybe the WFO thing might work? I mean it's kinda simple an all but

:jester:

I live in Newfoundland. I have a 2004. Every spring I've experience the same problem starting my FJR. The only thing that works is to hold the throttle wide open until it starts. It will start. However, you may run down the battery. If I know my battery is getting to the point that it isn't turning the bike over fast enough, I connect a battery boaster to the battery and continue to crank.

Try the WFO trick. As for getting the bike out, well, I was gonna go work on it and get it out for tomorrow. 'Cept they changed the forecast and we had about 2" of rain yesterday (on frozen ground.. everybodies basement is flooded), then I woke up this morning to this:

Jeez, between you and Bungie, does no one north of the border have the bikes out yet? Then again, my friend just got back from snowmobiling in your area............

You need some octane, buddy!!!!!

ok so I was trying not to kill my battery. I will try the wide open method and put a booster on it if I have too.

Sull there were a lot of bikes out today. I was in the minivan with my wife and 3 kids though. You planning to ride up this way in 2009? I am not planning any long trips but sure to get to Maine.

No EOM ??

Gypsy,

Do the pipes smell of unburnt gas?,... Battery "up" and healthy (on tender for the winter)? I know there are two camps on this but i still really feel the need to start the beast once a month through the winter and let the fans cycle a couple of times. I believe it keeps "reasonably" fresh fuel in the pump, lines and injector bodies. Always put away with fresh oil and usually changed after the first couple of runs in the spring.

Was out for an hour/so rip today between sessions in the basement fighting with the F'n water comming in.

Cheers

I have had mine out for a few weeks, but it's still in the low 30's in the mornings and evenings (I need hand guards!!!).

Gypsy, I had the exact same thing happen to me when I pulled out the FJR this year, (although my battery was totally dead and I had to jump start it with my truck) it took full throttle while cranking it over for 10-15 seconds to get it going, with a very strong smell of gas to boot. Me thinks it had to do with.....well I'm not sure but it was a PITA.

I don't mean to insult anyone but did you check to be sure the kill switch was not engaged. I will not say why I thought of this but perhaps someone flipped it by mistake. Embarassing but an easy and cheap fix if that is the problem.

I had the same problem this spring. The problem was that I forgot to connect the power commander ground wire to the battery

Just something else to think about while you're out there with the bike... Did you use any fuel stabilizer or have you filled the tank with fresh gas since you put the bike up for the winter...?
