Gauging interest for a YFO gathering in 2023. In the past, we have done this in the fall but, given the fire season out here, I'm thinking of scheduling it for early June which hopefully will allow for the passes to clear and (fingers crossed) no fires to contend with. Depending on interest, I'll start looking around for hotels, etc. probably in the Mariposa area where we did the first YFO or maybe Oakhurst.

2023? Did you mean 2022? Put me on the list, 2022 or 2023.

My friend, there is sooooo much great riding in CA not just the east central region! There are the Sierra passes (108, 4, 120, 49 section called The Little Dragon) which you could easily hit during the YFO gathering. Lots of other really fun roads in the area as well. Then there's NorCal which includes gems like 36, 299, 3, Gazelle-Callahan Rd, not to mention all the fun in the Sierras like 49, Bucks Lake Rd, Quincy-LaPorte Rd, 70 aka Feather River Canyon, etc... and I'll bet, dependent upon his schedule, Doug/bugnatr would guide you around his hood. And then of course, the famed PCH/Hwy 1... tons of other stuff in SoCal too... just depends on how much time you've got to spend, what you want to see, and where you want to go! ;)
East of San Diego I found some very good roads. East out of Chula Vista to 94 along the border, Mount Laguna, every road around Cuyamaca, Julian for apple pie, down Banner Grade, across the Anza-Borrego desert to Borrego Springs, then west out of B Spgs up Montezuma. You'll love the FJR on these roads. Bring water!

And a bit further north of San Diego is 2/Angeles Crest Hwy, 74/Palms to Pines Scenic Hwy, 18/Rim of the World Hwy, Tujunga Canyon Rd (lots of other connecting roads too) and over to the west are a bunch of canyon roads Tuna Canyon Rd (a one-way road which is a ton of fun), Latigo Canyon Rd, Encinal Canyon Rd, The Snake on Mulholland Hwy (smile pretty!), and of course a stop at the famed Rock Store also on Mulholland Hwy, 33 out of Ojai, Hudson Ranch Rd along Pine Mountain... just for starters. :D

Angeles Crest Hiway. Rode that on my Honda VTR1000 couple years ago. Near the top dodging fallen rocks became sport. Only question was, size of football or size of basketball? New Corvette with low ground clearance turned around!

I totally know of what you speak... I hit one of those rocks when riding it a couple of years ago and totally fubar'd one of my front tires... no cell service up there so a kind cage driver gave me a ride down to the bottom of the hill to call a tow truck... definitely something to know if riding in the area! ;)

Well, kiddies, I have spent several hours this past week talking with various hotels, getting quotes, and have it narrowed down to what I think will be the best place in Mariposa. The only catch is that June is peak season in the Sierras and the prices are through the roof everywhere.

The quote I got for the Mariposa Lodge is $224/night + taxes and that is the lowest price of the larger hotels all around Yosemite on both sides of the passes (Mammoth has slightly cheaper rates but they all have a policy where you can cancel your reservation but you still will pay for one night's hotel expense no matter how far in advance you cancel it). There might be small mom & pop motels but for a larger gathering, that wouldn't work as they wouldn't have enough rooms.

Please let me know if this would still be of interest at this price. At least you have a lot of time to save up some pennies if you do! ;)

Cuddling, spooning whateverthehell you call it...that's NOT happening!

That price seems a little out of touch Tyler. I realize it's high season and all but damn, really? I'd have to think hard about this one at that price.

Yes really. Believe me, George, I was as shocked as you were... I checked at least 15 different places all over the Sierras near Yosemite... that price was one of the lowest I could find. Guess they're trying to make up for lost time from the past couple of years or something. The only other option is to stay in the central valley like Stockton but, honestly, that's kind of defeating the purpose of staying in the Sierras and being within close range of the park and passes.

If the budget doesn't fit for people, guess we could forego Yosemite and maybe find another alternative like Eureka or somewhere like that out by the coast. I've done the best I can for the Yosemite option. It's not like there aren't any other wonderful options in NorCal. ;)

I guess if folks still wanted to go to Yosemite, I could just post a date and let folks find their own accommodations to fit their budget. Then plan a group dinner on Saturday night somewhere. The town of Mariposa isn't that big so even if folks were spread out at different hotels, it wouldn't be too hard to congregate for meals and telling tall tales in parking lots. ;)

Don't want to be a wet blanket Tyler, just putting my thoughts out there! Keep the discussion going and the collective will come up with a solution.

G, you're not a wet blanket at all... I totally understand the issue of costs. Not sure if anyone else is willing to jump in here as it's been mostly crickets in response to what I've found and reported which makes me think that folks aren't on board at that price. Not really sure how else to move forward with a big gathering if the hotel costs are prohibitive to people attending.
