Over the weekend, my Zumo locked up. I thought I'd share the short version of my experience.

This past friday morning, I was packing the bike for a 420 mile jaunt. I installed the GPS cradle on the bike, then snapped the GPS unit on the cradle. While I was fastening down the annoying screw on the cradle, the GPS was powering up on its own like normal. I wasnt quite ready to leave, so I powered down the GPS. Ten minutes later, I was ready to roll. The GPS would not turn back on.

Through out the 7 hour trip, I left the GPS in the cradle and pushed the on/off button a zillion times.

Saturday, I plugged the GPS in the laptop. Nothing. I then removed the battery and plugged the GPS into the laptop once more. The GPS turned up.

I reinstalled the battery and the GPS unit worked fine.

in the future, to avoid removing the battery, press and hold the power button on the bottom right, and press the top left button with the plus sign

that is the "reboot" sequence

Yup... the Zumo 550 is known to sometimes freeze up and require a battery removal/reinstall to reset. I haven't had it happen to me since the last time I updated the firmware, but I still keep an allen wrench of the appropriate size in my bike's toolkit just in case. It's only happened to me twice, and I've had a Zumo for about 4 years now.

The worst bug I've run into with the most recent firmware is that the Zumo very rarely just shuts itself down. It's happened about 2-3 times in the past year. Just hit the power button, and it comes right back, but my music is paused. This makes me think it has something to do with the music player.

Good suggestion, but it didn't work for me.

I've experienced numerous freezes on my 550, usually when trying to use the Bluetooth function (software is up to date). Each time the power and + button reset has brought it back to life. I've found the Bluetooth function with my Motorola Droid to be extremely unreliable; Garmin's support has been useless as far as offering a solution. My apologies in advance if this constitutes a thread hijack.

Thanks Mike, I didn't know that little trick and it worked just fine!

By the time I went looking to this Forum for answers I'd already tried every Allen key and Torx screwdriver I own trying to get the case open to remove the battery. What size are those little screws, and are they Torx or Allens?

There's only one screw holding the battery in, and that's an allen head of some size. The rest of them are torx (T6, I think) and hold the case together. Those are the ones you remove to replace the screen.

Not trying to change the subject here, but I just got a Zumo 550 on eBay and was considering updating the maps. The current maps are not that old, about 12 months. If I buy the map upgrade, can I share it with my buddy who also has a Zumo or will it somehow only work with 1 device? We were talking about splitting the cost.

Any must know tips you've got for a newbie Zumo user are welcome. Is there a Zumo 550 board out there?

Thanks so much.

The map update is for a single unit only, you can't share it. If you are going to keep the ZUMO for the foreseeable future, or if you are concerned about always having he most recent maps, buy the lifetime update. It is about twice as much money IIRC, but I think it is worth it.

If you can get the Zumo to go into USB mode, free up internal memory by deleting various vehicle icons and the languages you don't use. Then do a hard reset, you will lose all your user data, but that just means going in and setting preferences again. Also, try rebooting without an SD card, as a bad card or older slower card might be causing problems. A firmware upgrade some time ago allowed the use of SDHC cards. Next, of course, do a firmware upgrade to the latest. Map set should be unimportant, but it may prompt you that later maps are available.

If you're still having problems, and depending if you have had touch screen issues, it may be time to replace the digitizer.
