I'm interested in a Corbin for my 06 and know a few on you have bought one. How are they working out for you?

I think someone purchased one with 2" plus foam. Any Pictures? What I've seen looks a bit strange if you do only the riders seat.

I had one on my old FJ1200 and loved it but I'm having a bit of a hard time swallowing the $400 price tag. I read Corbins response to inquiries about the cost.

Thanks

The price is well worth it. I have a few beefs with the new seat however. The seat is 29" which is 2.3 inches lower than the stock. So even with the +2 the seat sits lower than the stock. They also have made the seat shorter than the previous years. I don't know if this is due to the yamaha seat design, but the length of the seat is 12" and the width is 13" as opposed to the dual canyon for the previous years which sat at 14" and 14".

The seat puts you close to the handlebars and it's made for short people.

err, no offense to the height challenged among us.

On a different note, have you tried using the throttle? It's there for a reason you know! :D

Next!

are you member? is the discount for real?
Temp, I'm not sure about that. Gary McCoy sells stuff at a 15% markup, and is only giving us 10% off if we order from him on Corbin. All that stuff in hand made. I seriously doubt a 30% drop in price. And you know what? I hope I'm very wrong. But I ain't gunna go register just to find out.

Of course, I already spent my money, and my Corbin stuff is supposed to be here TOMORROW!!!! WOOHOO!

I ordered direct from Corbin to make sure to expedite the order...so I hate to say that I paid full retail. I was worried about the extra wait going through a middle man. And I thought I was going to be lucky to get the stuff prior to leaving for WFO. And it shipped last Friday! Guess they put me at the top of the list. Maybe telling them I was going to an FJR rally sparked them a bit, too.

Yeah,

I find the whole thing a little suspicious since the site is in the UK(?). I even asked corbin about a group buy and they didn't seem to interested since i never got a response.

I have the "front" seat on my 06..the passenger seat is stock. The corbin is lower, but it does not move you closer to the bars, except by height. The padding at the front going up the tank actualy makes you sit farther back. The stock seat "allowed" you to scoot forward more as there was no padding there.

I am happy with mine. At 5'9" I would consider myself average, not tall...but the 31 inseam makes me like the lower seat...and again, it is not that much lower, if you are built like me, as the extra padding around the front and sides of the tank make you spread your legs abit more. It is not as narrow as the stock in the very front of the seat either...so to me, the seat only feels about an inch lower, I can get both feet flat on the ground, but was only about an inch away from doing that on each side with the stock seat.

The real good part of the Corbin seat is it does not have that sharp edge where the textured part met the smoother part of the stock seat. This felt like a saw trying to cut my butt-cheek off on a long ride.

It also lacks that tacky surface, so the corbin is a bit easier to move around on some ( a little armour-all on the seat and your leathers and you can slide about even better.

I am not bitching about the price, as I sold the Corbin off my Vulcan for a good chunk of change..and that helped pay for the FJR seat..(so a good re-sale value here)

I got a 1200 mile trip coming up so I'll let you know about the long distance use of the seat later.....

Well, I finally got my new Corbin front seat + Smuggler today for my 2006 FJR1300AE.

All I can say is - WOW :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: ! I only had enough time to got out for a quick 120 mile ride because I am leaving on a business trip tomorrow in New Orleans. The seat is definitely BETTER than the stock - I have a Corbin on my GL1800 and I love it.

The quality of the Smugger is EXCEPTIONAL - after installing, you would swear it is stock other than a different key.

I will try and post pictures on Saturday when I get back - though the seat + Smuggler were $1130 delivered from Corbin, I know they will bring years of enjoyment and this a worth the price.

Best Regards,

Shane

I thought the smuggler accepted the standard yamaha lock and key? Didn't you get an extra lock when you go the bike? Does it not fit?

To be honest, I didn't even think to try! I'll have to look when I get back from vacation in a couple of weeks!

Corbin Seat.. installed!

Corbin Smuggler.. installed!

Test ride about 40 miles. My butt hurts. But the seat has potential. Frankly I rode about 250 the other day on the stocker, and it was better than my '04 by far. In comparison, the Corbin, as goes their reputation, is a brick. Now, that ain't necessarily a bad thing....

The seat is very well made and looks great. Sitting on it with my feet on the stock pegs, well, it's so so. With my 28 inseam, I don't get a whole lot closer to the ground because my thighs are kept too far apart (the seat is wide at the front). That's with me up at the front of the saddle, too. My reach is better, but it ain't the 1.5 inches I was expecting (that would make me flat foot). Realistically for me, it's more like 1/2 inch.... 3/4 at tops. I certainly am NOT flat footed. I'm going to have to lower the bike. Well, I don't HAVE to, but it's so easy for me to do that I probably will.

Cruising around, the seat feels pretty good. I think while carving, this '06 sear ought be be REAL nice.

With my Wild Bill highway pegs deployed and my legs stretched out, I'm back "in the pocket" and that actually feels REALLY nice (except for the hardness perhaps from needing broken in a LOT). My shoulder and wrist position while in the pocket is VERY nice. And I am certainly down in the bike more. That's what I get out of the seat being lower.. not ground reach, but tucked into the bike more. The "cone of silence" is now complete with the stock screen up all the way. Remember, though, I'm only 5' 6".

Someone commented on whether or not they thought that risers were even needed, and that's not far from the truth. Once I get my DH risers installed (maybe tomorrow or Monday), then we'll see where we...uh... sit.

Side note: Having the risers installed will make it more practical to lower the bike. For those of you worried out cable length, well, if you are short like me, you can raise the forks in the tree to compensate a little for the cable/hose length if you have DH risers on. Also, if you DO want to raise the forks, you just about HAVE to have risers because the adjusters on top of the tubes are just about hitting the bars as it is in OEM configuration. Raising the bars makes it better for raising the forks.

The Smuggler is VERY nice. The hasp/latch thingy is a POS, but the rest of the box is pretty nice, everything quality, fit and finish wise, and it's an excellent color match. There's quite a bit of space. Smitty's size 14s might even fit in there (we know 11.5s do!). I have an 8.5x11 envelope laying in the bottom, and it is almost flat.

The Smuggler lock does look like it can be adapted to the Yamaha lock. I'll try to get down to a locksmith tomorrow and see if they can swap out the tumblers. Might even try it myself, but you know that usually ends up costing me more.

So the Smuggler stays. The seat? Well, I'm going to give it a good workout over the weekend. I think it's a keeper, but it's too soon to tell. Like I said, it has potential. Just don't know if I'm going to get a chance to REALLY break me and it in before the WFO trip. I know the stock seat for me is a 250 mile seat anyway. I hope the Corbin gets a lot better than that.

Congrats! Man that looks sweet :) Before you go and do anything ..err... rash like lowering the bike. Corbin allows one free adjustment to the purchaser as part of their warranty. Send it back and tell them to shave the bull nose down and make any other adjustments you see fit. Corbin may seem hard, but I've gone many a mile on them without any complaints.

I wish i had one :( At this point I either have to ride up there and have them make a custom tall one...or have a custom one built a Cee Baileys because they are close by...or just get the special foam and go to my local upholstery shop and tell them to make it exactly to my specs. I'm not too happy with the design they came up with. I think they could've done something more like one they did for a honda pacific coast.

The 2006 corbin seat needs to be narrower in the front, longer, wider in the rear. It needs to be height adjustable like the stock and a bit more concave in my opinion.

Incidentally did you have to take the height adjustment brackets off for the install?

The height adjustment bracket does not work at all with the Corbin seat. The instructions tell you to completely remove the plastic insert before placing in the Ccrbin seat.

Thanks for the tip about sending it back in. I may certainly do that, but it'll have to wait until after WFO. It's only two weeks to departure and I'm not going to even try.

Back in the pocket, the seat feels nice. Conforms pretty well, the shape is pretty good for me. Yep, it's just the front that doesn't help me, what Temp calls the bull nose area. Mostly, the thigh part needs to be narrower when I come to a stop. All seats are like that for me. I had to take the bull nose area on my '04 seat right down to the pan.

guys,

Got my 06 corbin seat, front & rear a couple of weeks ago. Love it! The stock seat is wider which I found on longer rides to be a pain. The corbin is more comfortable and yes you do lose the seat adjustment when you put the corbin in.

Also got the backrest for it. I've taken a few riders with it and they like it also. It's easy to put on and off and easy to adjust for the passenger.

Any of you lucky guys planning on selling the stock seats? I'm in for $100 for the front and $75 for the rear.

I am keeping my seats. Never know, I might want to take someone for a ride sometime. And if I have to send the Corbin back in, well, I ain't gonna stop riding.

For a little over 2 bills you can get a new OEM seat set from Gary McCoy, if no one else ponies up.

Yeah, already talked to Gary. He's a great guy. I'm a cheap bastard. Just can't help it :hyper:

Are you related to Smitty? Yeah, I know I already tipped everyone off about GM and the seats. Thought maybe someone might have missed that thread. Plus it should help keep the costs down. What, some guy was hinting at 4 bills for his set of seats? Forgeddaboudit.. ;)
