I was on the phone with Yamaha Motor corp USA this morning on another matter and asked the product specialist why Yamaha was not offering a heated grips kit as an accessory on the 2006 FJR1300AV since it came stock with the AEV model and it looked to me like both models used the same wiring harness. He checked with someone else and told me that it was "in the works," but the kit would not be available to dealers for another 4 - 6 weeks. It's close enough that Yamaha has a part number for the kit. It is: ABA-2D237-40-00. That's the good news. The bad news is that MSRP will be around $450. It is supposed to be plug and play. The wiring harness on the FJR1300AV has connectors in place. Panel B (the black plastic panel on the left side closest to the gas tank) has a partially cut "knock out" for the control pod with a plastic retaining clip which mounts to the underside of Panel B. Do NOT cut out the "knock out" piece before removing the retaining clip. See pp. 6-8 & 6-9 of the Owners Manual and pp. 4-2, 4-3, 4-9 & 4-10 of the Service Manual for removing top black panel pieces and lower side fairing pieces to install heated grip kit.

$450??? MY GOSH!!! I felt violated when I bought my Yammie Trunk Case! The high priced accessories is rediculous! IMHO, these should have came on the bike to start with.

Okay, I feel better now. Thanks for the tip on grips!

It`s a rippoff alright but there is a simple (and maybe smarter ) alternative: Heated Gloves ! Are you reading this mama Yama ? :assassin:

I was thinking the same thing. I think I can get a complete set of heated clothes for what they want for their grips.

I'm putting on the Honda heated grips (controller looks better) described in another thread. Got them and the harness from University motors for @ $175. I'm just waiting to collect all my electronic farkles to put them on at once.

After you get those installed, could you post some photos and let us know how it went? I am particularly interested if you are able to mount the rheostat control in the knockout panel on left side of the fairing and whether you were able to use the screw-on clip piece on the underside of the panel.

There are a lot of cheaper alternatives for heated grips! Like $30 plus the thermostat or switch of your choice. Go search the Keyword index at Micapeak.com.

Does anyone know if the ST1300 heated grip kit fits easily over the throttle tube on the FJR? This honda kit has a rigid tube in the throttle side (as does the BigBikeParts kit that doesn't get hot enough). If there is a slight mismatch in the size, it can be a bear to install...if it goes on at all. I tried to install the BigBikeParts kit and stopped because it was waaaay too tight a fit.

So....can anyone comment on the ease of assembly of the ST1300 kit on an 06' FJR ?

thanks,

Steve

Hey Sdrake,

I posted this about a month ago (another thread on this forum) in response to heated grips for the 06FJR:

Have read this thread with great interest since the beginning. I too felt Yamaha was ripping us off charging those prices for the factory heated grips. In fact I'm sure the less expensive grips are identical to the factory grips. Yamaha buys those parts from another source & then gives them a Yamaha part number.

Since I also wanted heated grips (I ride all year long) & I wasn't happy with the Yamaha price or the way the Yamaha Control unit sticks out so high from the dash panel, I came up with a different approach. My friend John has an 04 Honda ST1300 with heated grips. Have ridden his bike in winter & those grips get HOT. After inspecting his bike's grips (he & I share a garage) I discovered the grips on his bike are identical to the Yamaha factory grips. The control unit is different, & I like it better. So I order the Honda part # 08T50-MCS-100 after searching on the web & found it for $160, & then installed it myself. Here are some pics:

The Honda Thermostat Control Unit shown above in my opinion looks much better than the protruding Yamaha Controller, & I only had to dremmel out the removable square panel.

This photo above shows my set up of grip puppies over the heated grips (yes the grips still get hot), with a vista cruise control & manic salamander end weights.

I think this profile with a flush mounted control unit is much cleaner than the Yamaha controller. The best part is it works! And I installed it myself.

The 06 FJR AE comes with Heated Grips from the factory, I assume that these two terminals under the right handle bar control of my 06 FJR A is for that purpose also. That is what I used for a power source & it works perfectly. :yahoo:

Thanks for reposting your installation notes.

So how hard did you have to work to get the heated grip on the throttle side? Was it tight or loose fit or just right (with a little hairspray)?

Steve, just a little hairspray did the trick.

War Machine:

How did you attach the Honda Thermostat Control unit to the cutout panel so it stays in place? I would appreciate any detail and pix you can provide on this point.

Hey kmkirlin,

I used a dremmel & the Honda grip kit comes with a template. Just take your time when doing it.

Good Luck & let me know how you make out. B)

the honda site says you need a wire harness with the heated grip kit. Did you have to install this as well?
