Does punctuation matter?

Oops, I've said too much already. I'll probably be swamped with PM's from Bustanut and Odot.
I was waiting to see the contributions to this thread from Bustanut and Odot. What do you bet that each will include (or be limited to) a choice, four letter word? Of course one must recognize that such a post may be brief, clear and to the point, not wasting the reader's time in trying to find the point.

Does punctuation matter?
It does to me. When I take the time to read something, I appreciate that the author took the time to spell and punctuate correctly. I spend a lot of time and effort composing, given that I don't know how to type and never went past public school.

Bad composition is almost as annoying to me as trying to read MadMike's Okie posts, which I gave up doing months ago. At least the illiterate aren't doing it on purpose....

 Hugs, MM!

Contributions? Don't hold your breath....

Of course, there's always....

I followed a link from this forum over to a speed-traps site and came across this post:

"I was caught in this speed trap I was going 68 miles per hour and was pulled over by a motorcycle unit he said do you know how fast your going I said ye 68 mph, he said no you were doing 83mph what a bunch of crooks"
The above comment gets an F- in punctuation. It's missing about 32 periods, including the last one. A semi-colon would have been an astonishing display of punctuation dexterity rarely seen on the Internet. And how did the poster determine that a comma was necessary? Better make that a solid F instead of F-.

The above post and others on the Internet make me wonder: Is punctuation completely optional on the Internet? Or maybe this person is just uneducated (stupid?). If it's the latter, then 90% of all respondents on, say, YouTube, are uneducated (in the case of YouTube, add angry and vindictive; but that'll have to be another post).

Does punctuation matter?
"I gots to be carefull Heres ya kno". The last time I said something about the public school system the Admin's pounced on me.

Anyway here is my true life story. I was a pretty intelegent child up until the 6'th. grade. My new english teacher issued a box of little books to everyone in the class to read and fill out when done. There must have been 50 books in the box. When we finished a book and filled out all the questions in the back you just pass it in. Now here's the good part.

She did nothing but polish here nails look into here mirror and comb here hair the whole time. You would have thought I was in a facial makeup class. She even polished her toes sometimes. I was brought up to be a pretty honest person while most everyone in the class was cheating and filling in the answer from other students I was on my own trying to do my best.

First term C- (All other subjects A's and B's)

Second tem D

Third term. F

Forth term, (Dam, at this point i figured out that i had to cheat too and catch up.) C-

Well after taking summer school classes for engish i was dropped down two grades and put with the less intelegent students. I ended up going to vocational school and learning a trade. To tell you the truth it worked out O.K. in my opinion. I enjoy what I do and have allways been able to find a job even in the worst of times. I have been running my own business for the last 10 years. So when you say people are (STUPID) you may want to question yourself at this time. It may not have been entirely there fault. Oh and buy the way, She married the principal that summer and never taught again, thank GOD! My punctuality and spelling are not the best but I bet dam sure I can machine parts better than you. Just Sayin!

Oh Yeh, feel free to correct my mistakes anytime. I need a better teacher than the one i had in 6'th. grade. Maybe it was just ment to be.

JB I love ya bro! You just have to remember we all have our special talents. I only wish i could expound in the venacular as well as you, but i guess it wasn't ment to be.

Nothing new to add here really..

Some people are just stupidheads :dribble:

No, not you two. I'm referring to the spelling and punctually illiterate.

:jester:

An English professor wrote the words:

"A woman without her man is nothing"

on the chalkboard and asked his students to punctuate it correctly.

All of the males in the class wrote:

"A woman, without her man, is nothing."

All the females in the class wrote:

"A woman: without her, man is nothing."

===================================

A panda walks into a café. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two shots in the air.

"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

"I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."

So punctuation really does matter, even if it is only occasionally a matter of life and death.

Does anyone remember Victor Borge's Phonetic Punctuation?

My "one single word" spelling pet peeve, which is abused beyond belief on any site pertinent to wheeled transport [a majority amongst those I visit, this forum not excluded], would have to be the use of break for brake! Aaaargh!

From one member of the grammar police to another, I think that it does matter. The message quoted says a lot about the writer yet he probably has little concept of the negative impression he gives. On the strength of his one sentence statement (if you can call it a sentence), I would suggest that he probably was doing the speed quoted and is an ***** too (and probably doesn't admit to have a very small *****).
Jill, are you saying that there is an inverse relationship between ***** length and punctuation? If so, you may be on to something, because I minored in English in collage, and I don't like to brag, but ........ Oops, I've said too much already. I'll probably be swamped with PM's from Bustanut and Odot.
Nowe thats phunnie!

I don't think people use bad punctuation because they are "stupid". Many people just don't understand how it all works. As said before, I think the issue is not that the internet or texting make people use bad grammer. The issue is that the internet and texting make other people's bad grammer obvious to everyone else.

...and some of the smartest folks I've met can barely spell let alone write whilst uzing punctatctions.

+1....don't know how many "professionals" I have done transcription for that this is the case. Hell, most of them have difficulty even speaking properly.

Our language has suffered much in the last century, and continues it's downward slide.

I look at txt spk as a new age computer based shorthand; helpful at times, fun at others :evilsmiley:

+1zilla I think most folks just getinto big of a hurry and dont bother reading before they hit the button or don't proof read stuff they wright and its really kinda silly when you have to read what the wrote without being able to take a breath at the end of a sentance causing you to get real dizzy and making you fall off your chair hitting you head and ending up like me witch is actually rather amuzing for you guys and my wife

Whew I'm dizzy :p

Does punctuation matter?
Maybe

The English language is in constant flux: from Chaucer through 'Willy-the-Shake', Revolutionary U.S., 'Ebonics', 'till....now.

Change is (is difficult). :)

I bet they can't ******' drive, either. I'd rather be stupid and know how to drive & write....

A few random, but related, thoughts:

A person may be very smart and/or intelligent, but, if they can't communicate their point(s), no one will know it or benefit from it.

Example: I know of an individual (not on this forum, btw) who does not use caps or punctuation, (and their spelling is, uh, very original, as well) making their messages very hard to read. Several times different people have asked them to make an effort to increase the readability of their posts, resulting in a flat refusal to make any change. This person is either a skilled tradesperson or a professional, but the knowledge they are attempting to convey is wasted; I refuse to take the time and effort to decode their posts. Oh, they also refuse to turn off reading conformation on their emails, further annoying me...

Crossing the spectrum, on one side are the people whose spelling and (lack of) punctuation make their writing a tedious effort to read. There are the people who use correct spelling and punctuation, making their writing easy to read and understand. Then, there are those few people who can bend spelling, punctuation, and grammar around in such a manner that you feel like you're LISTENING to them, rather than reading their writing, and you "SEE" their story, rather than reading it.

And, lastly, there is only one chance to make a first impression.

(Hey, I told you they were random! :) )
