I am by no means trying to step on toes or hurt feelings with this post about EOM, it has been in the works for the better part of a week. FJRFencer has posted an offer to Host EOM in Alabama, which needs to be considered (and I added that option to this poll as well). Luvtoride has been trying to get someone to take the lead for some time now, but it should not fall solely on the same crew for a 2nd year in a row. So, please read this post and Fencer's completely and let's get this done.

Ok folks, we need to get the ball rolling on EOM 2008. FJRFencer has made an offer to Host in Alabama (aka S-EOM). I’ve been talking to Luvtoride about taking EOM back to Lewisburg.

Our choice here then becomes returning to Lewisburg or exploring new territory in Alabama. We know what to expect in WV, and I’m sure that Fencer could keep us entertained in ‘Bama. There are pros and cons for both locations, but we need to make a decision on location soon.

I’ve been hesitant to throw my hat in the ring to this point due to nature of my profession. I can not guarantee that I will be here in September if the Corps allows me to go play in the sandbox (Iraq) or in the hills (Afghanistan) this year. The other is that I’m 1-3 states away from EOM worthy roads. And trust me, you don’t want it hosted in this part of South Carolina…

But we need to get things rolling, and I’ve been assured that if I get called away, other’s here will keep the event on track.

Luvtoride (Heidi) has baited the waters. Heidi, Jim & company have set the bar pretty high with EOM 2007. Lewisburg & the Brier Inn, IMHO, were an outstanding venue for EOM. There is also enough there in the way of good roads to warrant a 2nd visit. The route recon team (Jim, Heidi, Jeff A., and others??) put together enough routes for 2007 to carry over to 2008. I know that I’ll be spending some quality time on Potts Mtn / Rte 311 at some point this year! I’m sure that there are a couple of local members that could drum up a few new ones as well.

But I do know that the longer we wait, the harder it will be to find a hotel with the availability we need.

Lets consider dates; EOM has traditionally been held the 3rd weekend in September. This year, that falls on 19 – 21 September 2008. We also need to consider MotoGP Indianapolis on 12-14 September 2007. CFR has already booked 5-7 September 2008, and we had some riders attend both in 2007. Did I miss anything? So the weekends that are open right now during September would be either 19-21 September or 26-28 September. Or push into October, but I’m not sure how much the weather that time of the year would be a factor.

So, to the point, then. My proposal is that EOM ’08 return to Lewisburg, and hopefully the Brier Inn for part II. If there’s anyone else here willing to take the reigns for Lewisburg, then speak up. Our other option would be to take Fencer’s offer to explore ‘Bama.

If I were to move forward with the planning & coordination for Lewisburg, I’d need help; T-shirt whipping person, door prize begger(s), route planning, local coordination with hotel (can’t beat face to face time for free-bies!), logo design, registration, website, the list goes on.

I’ve put together events at work, from family picnics to Marine Corps Birthday Ball and Mess Nights, and I know they can be all consuming monsters.

So, lets hear your thoughts and suggestions (other than, “yup, sounds good to me”). If you vote for “other location” or “other date”, back it up with details. If you agree to one location or the other, include why(roads, scenery, weather, etc).

Oh yeah! I sent a message to Heidi Over a week ago :p

My feelings are crushed - must be the same thing I did to the SFO crowd

and my toes - GAWD - does the word steamroller mean anything  :D

p.s.

you have pm (s) ;)

I am OK with either. WV has some nice twisties. Northern Bama, especially the NE corner has some nice mountains on the tail end of the Appalachians and really nice roads as well. "Likely" to be warmer in Bama during that week but not sure that is a deal breaker for many. Only downside to Bama for me is the Orange that I tend to wear. For some reason people in Alabama dont like that color or the sound of Rocky Top!?

Feelin's & Toes in one swat, my work is done here...

So screw it;

To All; please re-read this last paragraph:

Responses like, "I'll go where ever" or "Sounds good to me" do not help in making a decision on location.

How about something like, "lets go to 'Bama because we just went to WV last year and I want to go somewhere new" or "Bama sucks cause the roads are for old people."

I voted for Lewisburg and for Sept. 19-21; however, I will attend regardless of where or when.

I voted for Lewisburg during 26-28 Sept. For those that want to attend the other events we can have a weekend at home before heading out again. It is hard for me to be away on consecutive weekends.

BTW...I will do what I can to help whoever takes the reins on this. Living in Williamsburg, I can at least make some phone calls. Just let me know.

Lewisburg//19-21 Sep.

I think we'd lose too many folks from New England/New York who are willing to drive to WV, but mighht find Al a bit too far to travel.

I voted for Lewisburg. Plenty of roads that I didn't get to ride last year so you can leave the routes from last year. Great motel. 750 mile trip from my home is a nice comfortable 1 1/2 day trip.

I voted for Lewisburg, Sep 19-21. It just looks like a better location on the map. There's no big metropolis bordering up against it. You can basically pick any direction 360 degrees to head out on a day ride without having to pass through a major city.

I really want to go to lewisburg. Figured late september would be cooler than early september.

All I have to do is not throw my back out 1 week before EOM this year!!!!

I too vote for WV, since it is my home state and I am not too comfy yet to take off on a major trip to another state on my own just yet. The date does not really matter to me. As long as I know far enough in advance when it will be.

I don't know ANYTHING about planning, but I AM willing to make some begging phone calls to help arrange with some door prizes and such. Also, if I know far enough in advance, I MAY be able to help with some registration at the site. I would only be able to arrive on the Friday and would have to leave on the Sunday, but I will help any way I can.

If there is anyone from last years' group that can forward me a list of folks to call for prize donations, please feel free to pass it on to me. I will make as many calls as I can.

Let's hear it for both of you guys for getting this moving!

I'd be up for the same place, but voted for "other" to throw in the idea of something in the Martinsburg WV, Deep Creek MD, Somerset PA area. The area has great roads, middle of the East Coast, has good highway access for people from farther away, and plenty of historical/interesting non-riding stuff (Gettysburg, Antiedam, DC, etc).

I'd be willing to help as able. I do travel a lot, sometimes for a month or so, and do it on very short notice, plus try doing the weekend high school sports thing with the kids, and a college search for one of them. I am the last person I consider reliable to be anywhere at a particular time, but Wayne listed jobs I can do like the T-shirts and such.

A thought on dates is to be careful not to back into when some of the parents are busy getting kids back to school.

The list is right here on the offers by vendors. I just went down the list and emailed the folks who are wanting to sell things to the FJR owners. Additionally I contacted Yamaha, Michlin, a couple of local Yamaha dealers and a few other folks whose products I was interested in. Jim

I may not be able to come...but I think in honor of these threads, the 2008 EOM should be titled...

EOM 2008, "The WTF Tour"

:)

Not coming? WTF is that? After last year, I thought that you loved us EOM-ites & the places that we ride.

Edited to add: Posted about two weeks ago by mua...

I'm trying to get some discussion going on this. I see that many have viewed this subject & will not post. This topic seems to have 10' pole marks all over it.
Ahhhh, the flurry of activity! See what happens when ya'lls 10' poles are taken away.

I voted for Lewisburg because I can generally only get two days worth of riding in during EOM. Lewisburg is far enough, anything further away is simply not worth the time spent superslabbing for the amount of time spent riding. There's a good hotel in Lewisburg, there are great routes already mapped out, and few of use managed to ride all of them last year. This is too easy, people!
