I was following TwoWheelObsession's excellent YouTube tutorial on lubing the shaft drive, but when I was putting the rear wheel back on, I couldn't find the washer that goes between the brake and the swing arm. I'm thinking it's somehow fused to the brake actually. I forgot to take a picture of it with the brake off, I can if I need to, but this is what it looks like now. There's a space there that exposes some of the axle, but it looks like there's a similar space on the bike in the video. Thoughts? 1st Gen '03

There is only one washer and I think you have it in the wrong place. Excuse the dirt, but this is mine.
Put the axle through the swingarm and put the washer on the axle The washer goes between the wide part at the end of the axle and the caliper. Have a look at the parts fiche as well (below).

You'll never have to excuse dirt on a motorcycle to me! But thanks for the picture, it makes me think that the washer is indeed fused to the brake, and you can see in that video that the brake is all black, but mine has the silver ring on it. Couldn't pry it off with a flathead, maybe I'll try harder. It was the exposed gap on the axle that concerned me, but I see it on yours too

I looked at your picture again and realized that you have a non-ABS Gen I (I clearly didn't see that when you mentioned it in your original post).
The bit of axle showing between the swing arm and the caliper is right and I agree that it appears that the washer is in place. I was a bit confused by the spacer between the caliper frame and the hub but realize that your spacer (#22) takes the place of the ABS hub on the first fiche I posted (#26).

Anyway, the assembly is obviously different but amounts to the same. This is the parts fiche for '03. Washer is #21.
