Brand New 2012 - dropped during make ready

My dealership owner was wiping off the dust my bike before delivery, and dropped heavy set of keys on the tank scratching it. He was concerned I might blow up, but I said just get me some touch-up paint, and I bet it will work just fine ... 75,000 miles later.

    2003 FJR w 40k miles - opinion on $4,000 value

My '04 has 74,000 on it, so an '03 at 40,000 ought to run you a lot of miles ... Hey, drifter. Your signature says you live in "Brevard, MC." Am I the only one with no clue as to where MC is?

    Clutch soak in situ?

'2004 w/ 73,000 miles. Never a clutch problem. Knock on wood. Don't know the problem the OP is concerned about...

    Old Oil From Walmart

If you'd chosen to stand in the Customer Service line as #16, and Joe Smith, from just down the street, had walked directly to counter and been taken care of, without waiting, ... how would you have reacted?   I'm guessing you would have appreciated Joe's assertiveness and simply applauded...

    Windshield Won't Retract

and same here my '04 for last couple years, I just thought the retract motor was finally getting broken-in.

What to add to a bone stock FJR

$13 buys you a "Cramp Buster" that slips over throttle grip; I choose 'wide' version. Available many M/C accessory stores. Mostly ride it.

    Let's Discuss Brake Pads

have an '04. light brake user. 69,000 use stock pads from Yamaha, 100%. no other experience. I need to visually inspect them for remaining pad depth. have swapped inside to outside pads to even up wear and avoid buying new sets. works w/o problems. @ 20K, and a medium user, you're about...

    2004 FJR Break In OIl

Welcome - sounds like great bike. have used dino, synth, dino in my '04 Since you're going to Synth, I'd do it in ~1000 miles/first longish trip after this current dino oil change. ... don't ask me for a rationale; just get to the oil that you intend to use.

    Miles on FJR

well at 69,000 I think there's a limited market for my bike. from your question you should sell your bike since your interest is in $$ vs. well ... everything else. No judgement - not bad attitude at all; so, get the now bestest of the best and tell us how good it is.

    gen 1 ignition switch

my 2004 became intermittent when turning on ignition at 58,000. needing several on / off cycling. never cut off when running though. new switch... 68000 now, all's OK.

At last - my first FJR ride.

Also have an '04. One of first changes here was to buy/mount Yamaha FZ1 mirrors that have a longer stem. Direct bolt on. Somewhere here I'll find a photo showing them and post it up. FZ1 mirrors were from the years that were FZ1 carbureted; don't know if the newer FZ1 w/ FI has same mirrors.

    tire wear?

hey OP Bulldog777, since you're considering an FJR I'd guess that tire wear / costs are in your figuring now. Some of the Iron Butt riders have reportedly used the Metzler 880 touring tire for their non-stop long distance ride competitions, but wouldn't lean the bike over far enough to...

Advice on Mechanical Check of 05 FJR before LONG trip

different take. don't need to do anything. your past and current riding history isn't going to be mechanically different from your 2000 mile each way trip to NY, except for two things: 1) tire wear 2) continuous riding in summer heat. so to address 1) tires: you do the obvious 2) heat...

Trading my HD for a FJR

I've got the Gen 1, 2004 with 68,000 miles, and never ride in stop and go traffic. But you live in Illinois with midwestern muggy summers, might do commuting & traffic(?), so get the 2006 and later Gen 2 for heat avoidance, also better suspension. If you want to 'trade' you're going to end up...

Update on my Avon Storm Ultra 2's

Front tires - I've been using Storm, and now Storm 2, since soon after they appeared (years). They've worn smoothly w/o surprises.   Rear tires had had been Avon Azzaros; I liked 'em and bought the 'last several' off Ebay and just went thru them. On a recommendation, just before the this...

Update on my Avon Storm Ultra 2's

Yes, like the Storm 2's, just about to cash them in at 8975 miles, rear. Have used the fronts before, but this is the first matched set/rear for me so I kept track of it.   Here's the photo with tread depth at just under wear bar remaining (~1.5/32):     I kept track of remaining tread...

    Oh ****! OMG.....now what?!

ugh, rotten worse-than-luck. yeah, kinda the way my thoughts go. ... the original owner possibly replaced plugs at the 600 mile service in a bit of proud new bike owner fanaticism, and managed to do a royal job on first 3, before getting the technique down for plug #4. Not that it fixes the...
