The engine is cold and the popping is unburned fuel. thats why it doesn't do it when warmed up.

In the heat gas expands and the pressure can push the gas to the overflow. Just don't fill it over the rim of holes and you should be good to go. There are some info on this in the search and a way to cure the ill if it continues.

SV 650 is a hoot and is bulletproof. DL 650 may be too tall but a great all around bike. Or any supermotard would be cool.
