Air Filter - Change it? 36K miles

Filters (generally) get better -- filter ever smaller particles -- the dirtier they get. You'll know they're too dirty when (either one or both) performance or fuel economy decreases. You're welcome.

    running lean

Maximum heat is produced when the engine is producing maximum power. In the '60s, Honda claimed that their motorcycles were designed to run at 75% of maximum -- continually. I'm pretty sure the FJR is at least that good/durable. 'Running lean' is good -- IF you can get around "driveability"...

SkooterG and his Papa Chuy drank gallons of Kool-Aid.

When it comes to (most) M/C magazine reviews, I try to "read between the lines"... In the latest Sport Rider, Sir Alan says: "...with minimal rider effort the BMW changes direction in a very assured and confidence-inspiring way." I read that to say -- this bike kind'a resists changing...

    Engine oil

Fine in any climate... The FJR runs at a, somewhat, constant temperature (controlled by coolant thermostat and fan/s) and an oil with '40' in it's description will get no (more or) less viscous than any other '40' oil (will be in the '40' range of viscosities at ASTM specified temps).

    Just the battery, or...?

A voltmeter is your friend. A small digital multimeter is easy to come by and can give you much info. A fully charged FJR battery (factory fill, AGM) reads 12.8 volts (many will read 13.0 V) -- 12.5 volts is about 50% charge. IME, a failing FJR battery will only maintain lower voltages after...

Ugh. I'm so tired of the Fair Weather poseur doo-rag "bikers"

Fair Weather poseur doo-rag "bikers" Sadly, that's the public image of the quintessential "American Biker" -- much publicized by American media, Hollywood, and the entertainment industry. I, too, have ridden SR20. I've also followed custom-cruiser/chopper-style bikes with foot-wide rear tires...

    Oil weight

Isn't that what they say about beer...?

    Tuning for economy

I'm in no way an expert either... :( But, I think the problem lies with the FJR's limited ECM computer power and limited number of adjustable engine controls -- just not as sophisticated as some...? Too bad about that 100K Mi. plan -- given some knowns: FJR's avg 40 MPG and...

    Tuning for economy

This from our own 'Silver Penguin': I can verify those mileage figures -- I have a friend with a BMW F650GS Dakar -- and, in general/ordinary riding, I've observed him getting 75 MPG. I think BMW/Rotax does this by using very sophisticated computer control of the Fuel Injection: using no-to-very...

    Tuning for economy

Sounds like you're doing the best you can with what you've got...? Often increases in fuel mileage (given a fixed engine size) are found in the aerodynamics arena: frontal area and coeficient of drag. The laws of physics are difficult to argue with... Light weight, small engines, and...

    Continental divide ride

Yep, rode Adventure Cycling's Continental Divide Ride -- 2800 miles on mostly forest roads as close to the Divide as reasonably possible. But that's a dual-sport ride; and you should have companions and d-s tires (maybe not an FJR either...? :o  ). Ends are Eureka MT (N) and Antelope...

    thought on solo saddle sore

Jim Carroll once told me about touring with another rider in Mexico -- he said: "It was so dusty we had to ride 5 miles apart."

    Tuning for economy

Usually, any more leaning of the A:F ratio (after the EPA gets its licks in) tends to show-up as driveability issues: flat spots in acceleration, surging, etc. That's not to say engines can't be tuned leaner -- they can, but it must be hidden from the operator (like shutting off the fuel when...

    Tuning for economy

I'm not so sure that any lean A:F ratios will do any harm to a (naturally aspirated) IC engine? (would running out of gas, an extremely lean situation, do any harm?) Many lean-burn (higher A:F ratio than stoichiometric) combustion chamber designs have been done successfully -- driveability is...

    Switch

Not that it applies to the problem/s you're trying to solve: But, 12.4 volts -- at the terminals of the FJR's OEM, factory fill, battery -- is only about 50% charge. 12.8V (min.) is what you should have (many good FJR batteries read 13 volts). Good luck.

Ugh. I'm so tired of the Fair Weather poseur doo-rag "bikers"

Well..., at least there are none of your Fair Weather poseur doo-rag "bikers" brothers out there on SR 20, either... :o

Powerband very different after minor mechanical work

Technically speaking...: (although I don't think it happens, generally, with FJRs) The cam-chain length is/can be part of the timing equation -- as it lengthens, the cam-sprockets' positions tend to lag-behind the crank-sprocket's position. There are (and, have been...) many custom devices to...

    Pulled over by CSI

As it relates to the OP's incident: From Wikipedia: "VASCAR was invented by Arthur Marshall...in 1966[1]. He was inspired to create the device after watching a police car...trying to pace a speeder" Seems...? Some use of technology (even simple technology) might've lessened the in-traffic...
