They use a low power signal that most detectors won't pick up until you are within a few hundred feet of the vehicle. There is usually no advance warning on a detector.

My ***** dealer over tightened the tank bolts causing the heads to strip the next time they were removed. I ended up drilling the rest of the head off, removed the tank, then I was able to unscrew what was left and replace the bolts.
