Wicked Webby Air Box Mod Warning

I wasn't questioning the power gains, I was questioning why the filter was flattened in the first place. Why would you open up the air box to reduce resistance and then flatten out the filter and increase resistance? My point was that you would gain even more power by leaving the filter...

Wicked Webby Air Box Mod Warning

Now your talking! Following this thread over the last few months, I never understood how you would expect to get more power by flattening out the filter. Pleats increase surface area resulting in a lower velocity through any one point in the filter media for a given flow rate. Seems like a...

Problem with throttle on 08 FJR

Make sure your idle speed is set between 1000 and 1100 RPM after the engine is warmed up. There have been many reports of Gen IIs stalling if the idle speed is set too low.

Anyone from Georgia taking a car to EOM?

I believe Vroompuppy is taking his motor home up on Thursday.

Fast Idle unit on throttle bodies

Try raising the idle to 2000 with the throttle before you go to the trouble of getting to the screw. I tried that the other day and it ran like crap! Much worse than the normal 1500 fast idle.

    Starter issues

Looking at the magnet that was loose, it looks like there are 2 sets of rub marks, one more centered and oval shaped and the other across the entire back. Just a thought but maybe the rubbing occurred due to a worn bushing in the rear of the starter (causing the oval mark) and that is what...

GIVI Top Case - How and Where?

That's the reason I went with option 2 as well. I didn't feel like a plate bolted through the stock rack would transfer the weight to the frame as evenly as the Givi rack does. Mine is extremely strong and solid, although I admit it doesn't look as good as the Premier rack.

    Maybe Yamaha is Listening

+1, mine looked good as well.

    First FJR Problems

The tightening order is on pages 5-9 and 5-10 in my '08 service manual. Looks like the main mounting bolts that could affect vibration are the 2 that sliders are mounted to and 2 that are above and behind those on either side. The upper 2 would require removing the left and right fairing to...

    Tested my heated grips today

I put Trackside heated grips from Cycle Gear on and love them. Before, even with winter gloves on, my hands would still get cold but now they're nice and toasty. :D I can even wear my more comfortable summer gloves down to about 40.

    Loud knock at cold idle

Same here but mine does it at 1500 rpm during the cold start fast idle but doesn't do it when started after its warmed up.

    Gash In Oil Filter

+1. An oil pressure switch would be set to come on at a pressure lower than what it is at idle. It would take a substantial leak to lower the pressure enough to cause a pressure switch to activate tooling down the road at 3500 RPM. Seems like a level switch would be better for a leak of any...

    Loud knock at cold idle

That pretty much describes where the clunking noise is coming from. When the engine does the cold miss-fire, the transmission gears bounce off each other due to backlash and makes that "thwock" sound. Pull the clutch in and hold it before you start and you'll notice that it doesn't make the...

    TBS question on 08

I think they all make the clunking noise shortly after startup, at least mine does on every cold start The engine miss-fires a few times for whatever reason when cold and the clunking noise is the gears in the transmission bouncing off one another due to the backlash in the gears and the sudden...

    Stripped Bolt Hole Options

I agree that the right way to fix it is to remove the cover and use a heli coil but you might want to try running a 1/4-20 tap into the hole. Being .014" larger, you would probably get enough meat to get a decently tight 1/4-20 in there. Looking at Howie's pictures, going up to an M8 screw...

    Need More Brakes!

Seeing this thread this morning finally made me go out and get some Dot 4 fluid and bleed my brakes. Like you, I've always felt like the front brakes didn't feel very strong but the back brakes felt great. I always assumed that it's because the back brakes are linked and you can put a lot more...

    What's missing in this picture?

Woops, I made the same assumption you did and thought that it was a captured design but I just went out and pulled the screw/bolt and the shaft is probably 1/16" inside the hole. The design is actually a "sandwiched" design where the entire assembly, including the aluminum fork outer tubes, is...

    What's missing in this picture?

Kind of a pain in that most people don't have a hex key that size and I've got 2 spark plug sockets in my tool box that don't have the 3/8" square hole broached all the way through. As long as the axle doesn't rotate while you're tightening it and you achieve the 66 lb-ft torque spec, it makes...

    What's missing in this picture?

The reason I did it that way is that I know that this type of clamp coupling method is the most common servo motor coupling type there is in industry and they are very good at handling torque. A joint of this size (28mm) is rated at about 138 lb-ft so the 66 lb-ft required to torque the bolt is...
