Well, I have my sights set on a 2003 FJR for sale at the local Ducati dealer here in Portlandia. I am currently riding a 2009 Street Triple which has been a nice bike but I am looking for better weather protection, shaft drive and lower maintance. Test ride has been done and the bike is awesome. You have to come from a naked bike to an FJR to know the difference.

So, any suggestions before I buy? I could not hear any ticking issues or cam chain slapping. These bikes seem pretty tough and if you take care of them they take care of you.

This bike has a older Givi top case, lower foot covers, bar risers, GPS shelf and some sort of funky USB speaker stuck to the bottom of the shelf which is switched on the lower right fairing. It also has an extra larger screen and had its valves checked for the 26k service.

Thanks ANZAC

How many miles on it? What tires/how many miles on them.

Are you keeping the Triumph?

Welcome to the FJR world and you got the quickest vintage. With the milage it's barely broken in. Keep a close eye on your wallet cause these bikes like to spend your farkle money.

Figure on coming to the Reuben Run next September.

Don't trade in the Trumpet they'll rape you on it.......sell it yourself.
I see that you had a Sprint ST which was my other choice. Just have lost faith in Triumph due to so many problems with me Streety - from defective RR to stator failure to defective water/oil pump in only 21k miles

Just wanted to say welcome to world of FJR's..

Omg! An 03 with 31,000 miles on the clock. I'd be all over that if it's in good shape. Just looked at the pics. Kinda hard to tell. The pics show a scratch on one saddlebag, but I could live with that. 5K seems a little steep, but I'd pay it if it's really nice.

I had a lot of problems with my 2006 Sprint also, all covered under warranty but I was worried what would happen after the warranty so when everything was fixed I sold it.......and went back to the Japanese.

Looks like a good find.

With a little negotiating, I would go for it.

You won't regret it.

I went from a 2006 fjr to a 2013 street triple r. Love the str. Loved the fjr and will probably get another. I just needed a break to a much lighter bike and the str is a blast. You will enjoy the fjr. good luck with your purchase.

Yes, the Streety is an awesome little bike. I commute on mine here in the Portland/Vancouver area and it's great for that type of duty. Almost four years of riding in the PNW on my roadster has me wanting something with more weather protection and better ride for longer trips like up to Olympia and such.

Get an extended warranty on you STR as it will pay itself if the stator or water pump go out like mine did. Then again maybe I got a Friday afternoon special :)

I've had an FJR since '04 and a S3 since '09. I really enjoy the S3 but it just isn't practical for commuting and longer distances. I won't want it to be my only bike. That said, the FJR is fantastic at a lot of things and you're really going to enjoy it, just differently. It's a lot heavier and more disconnected feeling than the S3 but can gooble up miles and miles while still being fun. My '04 FJR never had a single problem in the 9 years I owned it. I'm sure the '03 will do the same.

BTW, I'm actually in the process of selling the S3 because I just don't use it that much any more and am ready to try something different.

Well, due to a number of things (work and holiday related) I have not picked up this bike yet. I have be reading more about the ticking problems on the Gen 1 bikes and had a question about this one.

To the best of my ability I could not hear the ticking sound but according to the older postings you can check for oil film on the exhaust tips. This bike has what looks like normal carbon exhaust residue on the tips and a wipe inside the pipe looks normal. If the bike was passing oil from the valve guides how much oil film do you see at the tips? Does it look like wet oil dripping? If you look at the photos in the link you can see the residue.

I am thinking of running the VIN number at the local dealer to see what sort of records they have on file for this bike as well. My other option is to wait for spring and land a Gen 2 bike.

I think the actual percentage of tickers is very small and AFAIK they were fixed by the company. I don't believe there have been any explosions related to tickers. Mine was one of the very first ones before it became popular and was done with the older parts but has had no problem. It's a good idea to see whats been done to it but if the deal is good go for it and see if you can wear it out. I doubt you can

What is the build date of your bike? This one is 06/02. - I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

I got it July of 02 so it's an early one.#216 I think. It's stored in a friends shop and it's -27 this morning so I'm not going to check build date.:) :) :)

My 04 had the tick at 10 k miles and once repaired I never had any problems with the tick over the next 80k miles. It was a deer that ended the future of that bike.

With 26K on the bike I would not worry about the tick as it hasn't shown up yet.

5k is a little steep on price but not a deal breaker as they are taking in your trade. Sure you can get more selling it out right -when it sells.

I traded in my FZ1 on a KTM 990 Supermoto and it was nice to just turn over the keys and not hassle with meeting buyers looking for something for nothing.

Good luck, the FJR is a great bike.
