2006 Altitude recall question on my new to me FJR

ECU's are cheap on ebay, Smitty. Pick up a known 'good' one (see gapiob post above).

I bought on for 45 USD just to have a spare.

It's only the newer models that have kRzY expensive ECU price tags...

Yeah but, If all you have to do is ask the dealer to replace it why would you buy one?

- I know the problem, so if I have some dificultes, I will stop/start my ecu.

- FJR is not an HD, so I ride more quickly

My '07 got altitude sickness up in the Rockies on a VERY narrow & twisty road, in a long line of traffic with my son on the back. I had to rev the piss out of the motor and ride the clutch for several miles before I had a safe place to pull over so I could stop & re-start the bike. Even that didn't always work and the problem came back during other parts of that trip once I got over 6 or 7 thousand feet of elevation.

It was NOT fun. As soon as we got back from that trip, the bike went to the dealer to be fixed along with all the other recalls. No problems since.

You're True, if I'm in courbe, il Will be a possible bad time for me, but the issue is not imediat, it's realy progressive. Son juste make an acceleration, and ecu taxe New value.

Alternance for People Who ride often in Mountain, it's not the same

It has different symptoms on different ECU's. Not everyone experienced the surging. I know cranking the throttle didn't do anything for me. When I would stop to cycle the ignition the bike would stall. It took as little as 1500' to cause it. It wasn't caused by high altitude as much as a large change in altitude. For me it wasn't that large as I was experiencing it on the elevations changes in West Virginia.

Man...I had huge elevation changes from the day I bought my FJR. Never had any of those issues. Couldn't tell any difference after the recall was done. As said, maybe riding style, or just ECU differences. Wow!

I see several on Ebay, they all say fit 06 or 07's. They are even in a Yamaha parts box. My thoughts are they were the ecu removed under the campaign. So chances I would be buying a ECU just like the one I have.

I was told by 2 different dealer that campaign was closed and no loner available.

I would say look into the Part numbers, I would think and hope they changed the Pt #.

I can't see them refusing to do a safety recall. I'm betting a phone call would have an updated ECU shipped to your dealer.

I have to agree here. I guess the ECU wasn't an actual recall, but I didn't have to argue with my local dealer. I haven't ever bought a bike there either. I just looked at the service manager and said it is a safety issue. Replace it. I didn't even have to get into the symptoms I was experiencing.

As for the ECU's on Ebay; the only way they would be recycles is if someone bought a newer one and did it themselves. I doubt any of them changed under the notice would ever be put back on the market. Huge liability there. I would still be wary.

Experienced the problem every 1500 feet going up Pikes Peak with wife on back. Solved the problem by pulling in clutch, hitting kill switch off/on, hit starter button, release clutch and continue. I think the problem is related to having only one MAP sensors.

I believe Denver_FJR put a 08 ecu in his 07 a few years back.

Well a buddy that owns a dealership thought he may be able to help... After a call to Yamaha, that Technical Service campaign is dead. If it was a recall it would not be a issue.

But the good news is a dealer in Denver has the replacement kit. It is sealed and un-opened packaging. They told me it was ordered in 4 years ago for a guy, and he never came back to have it swapped out.

I bought it for $100. Bucks shipped. To me it is worth the piece of mind For a "C" note..

It'll be worth it. Before they replaced mine, when we were in TN and NC on vacation I just couldn't get over how poorly my bike ran with the changing elevations. I didn't know about cycling the ignition on and off but throttle input didn't really seem to help for me. I'd read about the issue but didn't realize how much more riding I'd be doing on this bike and especially how much more traveling. I probably could have lived without it in my home state of PA but this damn bike just makes me want to go go go.

As a double check, when the change is completed by the dealer IAW Tech Bulletin M2007-16A, they put a punch before the VIN on the steering head. FYI.

That's a great tip, My buddy's service manager told me the same thing.
