You....you...'Quisling' -- you! What happened to the defender/supporter/promoter of antiquated, anachronistic, old Bavarian ideas...??
Hey, Quisling was a defender/supporter/promoter of old Bavarian ideas. That's why his name became synonymous with traiter.... he sold the Norwegians out to the Germans. :comando:

Don - I really like the K1200GT too. It takes things to another level, and the K1300GT will probably be even better.... however there's a limit to how many ST type bikes I'm willing to have in the garage, and the FJR AE is going to be hard to displace. Now the S1000RR is another matter. I'm hoping there'll be some leftovers at some point.

Guys in the bidding war - come on, at least offer him the trade in value of $8870. If you're serious about helping him out of the FJR, its the least you can do. :jerry:

Since he hates it so much we are offering a lot more then it is worth to him

Yeah yeah yeah, final drives shouldn't fail. And they don't for probably 99% of the population of the BMW bikes. The failures get a lot of publicity, in part because the marque is viewed as odd and overpriced by so many folks.
While we might not ever know if that specific claim is true we DO know that 1 out of 6 BMW final drives fail in every competitive rally the past few years. These are the same rallies that no FJR final drive has failed. The statistics look more and more grim as the failure rate can be predicted with increasing precision.

And I don't think they're getting publicity because of the marquee or price, but because they're leaving riders stranded at the side of the road and losing rallies they'd otherwise win! I'm the winner of one of those rallies because a well serviced final drive couldn't keep from inverting it's guts for 8,000 miles.

But, far be it from me from dissuading you from guzzling the cherry flavor drink. I've found that BMW folks tend to have to come to the realization themself. Doing it on FJR forum probably doesn't do much good. ;)

Meanwhile good luck I really do hope BMW can get it's act together and fix the beloved brand.
This is not, actually, the thread I was looking for (I wanted the recent post of the BMW LT with the red-light on the dash to warn of impending R-D failure -- but coildn't find it).

The following is a copy of an email note to me from a riding buddy about another riding-buddy's BMW issues:

We just had the ... annual get-together and I was talking with Bob .... I asked him if the rear drive assembly on his LT had crapped out yet. He told me his had gone out 3 times on 3 different vacations. He got rid of the bike and is currently riding a DL 650. His original drive lasted 33k and the next two replacements went 11k apiece. They were done at 44k and 55k. After 3 ruined vacations, he'd had enough.
:( :(

When the 09 K1300GTs finally start showing up on the showroom floors I'll go check em out and probably take one for a test ride - I'm prepetually curious about motorcycles.

It looks good in the pictures.

I'd really find it hard to part with the FJR, though - it does everything I want it to, the Beemer's price tag is pretty painful, and the closest BMW dealerships are both 100 miles away.

https://www.maxbmwmotorsport.com/r1200-30-f...-drive-upgrade/ Well, it's official and confirmed by Fat Nazi BeemerDonS

The new K1300GT absolutely DOES have a new final drive, saw it with my own eyes at Victory BMW in Chandler and I am scheduled for a test ride on one at 1000 hours on Saturday at BMW of Scottsdale. The Final Drive Version 3 can be retrofitted to and installed on the R1200 series with Final Drive Version 2 for $1,200; if you live in New England Max BMW is doing it. If you live in the Southwest, Iron Horse BMW Motorcycles of Tucson will perform the conversion for same amount.

What does this mean to BeemerDonS with a Final Drive Version Numero Uno machine in my garage? Sometime before October 2010 when I ride back to Guatemala, Ingrid will be traded in on a new 2009 BMW K1300GT. Mach Schnell, Bitte!!!

Ok. I'm slow - how does changing the gear ratio keep them from blowing up?

https://www.totalmotorcycle.com/photos/2009...BMW-K1300GT.htm Todd R.: I'll know more in a few days time, but allegedly the internals have all been completely changed from the R1200 and K1200 rear end assembly configurations.

I do know looking closely at the housing, it is different than the R1200RT and K1200GT that were parked next to new bike.

bmwhd: I understand fully what you are saying, having ridden BMW for forty plus years and over a half-million miles I have been lied to by BMW before. I will not pull the buying trigger until after Labor Day of 2010, this will give me adequate time to review what is going on at www.bmwmoa.org/forum and at www.bmwra.org for any negative results out on the roads.

What I really hope will happen is BMW Owners News Technical Editor Paul Glaves will disassemble the Final Drive 3 version!!
