At least one good bit of news, from the LDRider list....

Subject: [LDRider] FW: Scott LaShier
If you have been following Tom Austin's rally updates, you are aware that

Scott LaShier had a tire problem on I40 and was injured. I got this info

from family friend Gary Stipe and wanted to pass it on:

I don't know if you have found this out or not, but Scott's surgery to

repair his pelvis was successful. He's still intubated and will probably

remain so for up to a week.

Folks can email him at: https://www.sunrisehospital.com/PatEmail.asp and

send it to Room TI09 under the name of Raymond LaShier

He's in good spirits and writing notes asking questions of all the staff...
This is very good news. Thanks for passing that along.

Cheers,

Allan

As a physician, I'm not quite sure why he should remain intubated for up to another week. Maybe (or hope) that information isn't right since there would be reasons to do that, which would indicate more going on than sounds like from the other posts. We'll see.

Would that have something to do with the collapsed lungs? That sounded like "more going on" to me but I ain't a Dr so, DoctorJ, can you shed a little light on what the lung problems would require to get fixed?

Really, all I needed to know was that Scott was alive and that he would remain that way with an excellent chance of a full recovery. His dismount sounds as though it was a horrible one.

Cheers,

Allan

Been a bit of IBR activity around here ....both official and unofficial

First, yesterday RenoGrace and I went down the street to Burning Man where we supervised the opening day. Grace's first time to Burning Man -being that she's only 5months old. Her mom and I are veteran burners.

We saw quite a few moto-bikes -including some dialogue in Gerlach with this fellow from Colorado as well as other places.

***But the highlight was crossing paths with IBR participant and buddy: Jerry White. The RenoJohn gang is no stranger to meeting up with Jerry on rallies -the last time when his BMW transmission grenaded while trying to keep pace on the fast Nevada roads during SPANK 08. This time Jerry is on an FJR so few concerns of mechanical issues.

Below you can see RenoGrace supervising Jerry on some routing -this is Grace's first exposure to the IBR, uhhh yep, because she's only 5months old.

I captured a shitload of video ....And Maybe (or maybe not) some of this video will surface for the mainstream. Let me tell you -we captured some of the most amazing elements of rallying -especially through Nevada landscape. A witness to the video thinks that the footage of Jerry may forever live in LD riding folklore.

Anyway, it was some good times meeting up with Jerry and witness him bagging this bonus as well as spend some fun time together ----all happened on the most grooviest corner of all planet earth.

-----

On the unofficial IBR stuff ....warchild rode into Renoville this afternoon and after a bit of silllyness --Grace tucked him in and gestured to her parents : "That man sleeps like a baby!" I guess she's qualified to say.

He best get some rest -as later we will wake him and show him some nevada style hospitality --perhaps a midnight ride on the playa will be on the agenda tonight(??)

Burning Nevada Style ....John

Ohh, no, don't take *that* route! Jeesh, I wish I could talk, are you kidding me, JerrJerr? Whatcha thinkin', boy?

The latest email from Gary Stipe (Scott's co-RM for the Void) says they're expecting to move Scott out of the ICU in a week. So hopefully the mention of intubation got mixed up with that timeline. I'll try to keep everyone informed about Scott's recovery.

Yes - please keep us posted on how Scott is doing.

Thanks Chaz, much appreciated. I hope that everything goes according to plan.

That's why they call it the "practice of medicine" Perhaps it has something to do with the dual chest tubes. Difficult to speculate without knowing the full extent of his injuries. The riders sure do roll the dice and take their chances in this event. My prayers are with him and his family.

HEY IGGY!!!!!!!!! I SEE YOU PEEKING!!!!! ok..........well..........you were, but now your not................

RIDE HARD RIDE SAFE AND GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Possibly you could ask a qualified trauma pulmonary specialist?

The effective treatment of trauma patients has been a rapidly evolving field, with many 'conventional wisdom's' falling by the wayside, and saving lives in the process.

Please consider the riders family may or may not have a chance to read your comments. No need to arm-chair quarterback the on-site medical team.

From Tom Austin's Day 9 report:

Bambi is Out, Bob St. George is NOTBob St. George hit a deer about 5:30 this morning near Craig, Colorado. Fairing plastic is damaged and the right saddlebag was torn off of his FJR1300 but Bob kept the bike up and he is uninjured. Bob was unable to start the bike and called for a tow. When the towing service arrived, they were able to get the bike running with a jump start. Apparently the battery was depleted because Bob didn’t turn off his auxiliary lights and other accessories after the deer strike. Bob has used duct tape to put the bike back together and is back on the road. This is no surprise to me or the Rallymaster. For those who don’t know him, Bob is one of the riders with True Grit. He will not give up unless it’s truly impossible to continue.

Happy reading all.

.
Sheesh! It has been a frantic few hours. Glad to hear that those who have had wildlife encounters are still doing well, even if the bikes are not. Best wishes to those injured for a quick and complete recovery, commiserations to those whose rally has been prematurely ended by forces beyond their control.

Intrigueing thoughts on the routing to the bonus locations, it'll be interesting to see how closely the riders actual routes match.

Cheers,

Allan

Hey folks,
If you haven't heard already:

I don't think Derek will mind me posting this, since he is officially out. He left me a phone message this morning and said he went down pretty hard in gravel and broke his collarbone. The bike was pretty banged up but still "rideable". He is working his way home today slowly. I've never ridden with a freshly broken collarbone but I can't imagine another 1500 miles would be comfortable. :(

Best of luck to the remaining riders,

Ride safe please,
I didn't ride for that long with my broken clavicle. But it sucks. And you aren't supposed to.
