More details are coming in. So far, I have to admit that I'm really liking what I'm seeing. Ducati was absolutely paying attention to the market on this bike. A very good write-up from Ducati News Today found here:

Granted, Ducati has taken a real "Swiss Army Knife" approach to this bike and it may wind up not doing any one thing exceedingly well, but its feature set is very, very attractive to me as a prospective customer. (More than just about any bike currently produced that I can think of, actually...) A great all-arounder would be worth the cost of entry - which is quite reasonable in my opinion; $14,995 for the standard model, up to an estimated $17,500 for the Touring model (including panniers, heated grips and center stand).

Unfortunately, I'm going to miss the Seattle IMS (I'll be on the other side of the world/equator that weekend) so I won't get to see the bike in person until at least early next year. :(

 
I may just have to ride over to the bay area and attend the IMS....

I want to see the new VFR, too.

Then there's the FJR updates?!?!?!

madmike2: If I had Niehart's money, I would just rake mine into a neat little pile in the front yard and burn it. I've lusted over Ducati's my whole life, but the mechanical upkeep has kept me away. If Dave would come down to Phoenix every 6,000 miles and adjust the desmodromic valves on a Ducati ST3 ABS, I would own of those beauties. Ooh, or an ST4 ABS!

 
I've been keeping a sharp eye out for any mention of major service intervals for this bike, but so far nothing. As I said in an earlier post, the engine on which the new MTS' "Testastretta 11 (degree)" mill is based requires servicing every 7,500 miles. One would *hope* that owing to this motor being detuned roughly 22% from its superbike incarnation there'd be a proportional increase in service interval duration (though I know it doesn't really work that way...). Ducati's 3:1 service interval ratio when measured against the FJR makes cost of ownership a bit hard to justify. Having said that, I could live with 12,000 mile intervals. I ride ~8k - 10k miles/yr (paltry, I know...) and a major service a year could be tolerated, though still not optimal.

The only other issue that concerns me about this bike is the 5.3 gal. fuel tank (including reserve). At an est. 35 mpg, that's a max range of 185 miles. Not so good. However, rumor has it that California Cycle works (the company that makes the 6.4 gal tank for the Ducati Hypermotard 1100) is planning to make a large tank for the MTS 1200 as well (assuming it's possible...). Get me at least ~225 miles/tank and I'll be happy. It's generally time to get off and stretch the legs and take a leak by that time anyway... :lol:

 
The Ducs for a while had a 6k, then 18k mile valve interval. Unfortunately, people somehow insist on going past maintenance schedules (shock - surprise - awe) and trashing their engines. Duh Gee "Must be Ducati's fault." The company made it simple and brought everything down to 6k. I'm not advocating putting off mx, but after the 1st 2 checks, the Ducati valves just don't change much, especially if you're not running track days every weekend & that's not the job for a Multi-Strada anyway.

Ducati's tried VERY hard to get past their "Italian quality" reputation. Hmmm, their MotoMarelli electronics sure seem to share a LOT with Yamaha electronics and a true Ducatisti knows what parts are shared with other manufacturer's products. They do have quality issues now & then, like their soft rocker problem in the ST4s. But then, Harley did too with the cam bushings, & how about Honda "solving" the ST13 heat issues? While Harley put the cost on customers if possible, I know Duke owners who had their bill paid long after warranty expired.

If you can do most of your own mx, the costs aren't that much different than the Jap bikes, because Ducati tends to simply re-use what they can as widely as possible across the product line. Apart from model-specific fairings and such, the machines are fairly straight-forward to learn to work on and you learn who always has parts. (Like with Triumph.)

While there are definitely horror stories out there, but I ran my ST2 as a commuter and treated it like any other bike through DC winters. I killed a deer with it and rode it for another year. It was as reliable as any Honda or Yamaha I've owned and the one bike I wish I never sold.

The new Strada looks like a winner to me. I like it.

My Mom and Sisters live in Orange, California and my Son Seth and I are visiting them at Thanksgiving. Now that I'm 61, I have made a "Bucket List" of items I want to do before they bury me in a pine box. I am riding all the way through Copper Canyon to the Sea of Cortez with ShinyPartsUp, Tucson Joe and Chris_D next November: So that one is crossed off of the list.

Owning a Ducati has been on my list since my early 20's, but as I previously stated: I've been scared off by reliability issues.

Your comments about ST2 got me thinking; I'm looking at this Ducati on 11/27/09; anything in particular I should be checking?

Any Duc Buyer Guides/Manuals I should be looking to buy? If I become Ducatisti, do I have to wear thong undies like Niehart?

Not sure about the new ones, but my 2000 Monster was not difficult to check and/or adjust the valves on. With the engine out in the open and all it was easier than an FJR. Yes, you do need to adjust and replace the timing belts at regular intervals or suffer the consequences. But this too is a pretty easy job.

Wowser Fred W and Sock Monkey! Do I get one of these hotties if I buy a Ducati? Just thirty minutes with one of these beauties, seven ounces of Bushmill's and Jumping Jack Flash on the stereo would kill off this old man; but certainly it would be well worth it. It would take the coroner a week to cold chisel the smile off Papa Chuy's mug! Better take my heart meds!
