Really? I didn't know that.

It doesn't make much sense either. Why would you want two cats in series with each other?

On my '05 4000 rpm on the tach is very close to an indicated 70 mph, which is actually a few mph less than that by GPS. So at a true 70 mph the tach shows something higher than 4k. The gearing calculator says it should be turning only 3821 rpm at an actual 70 mph, so my tach is definitely reading high. Maybe the new one is more accurate? Or even reading too low?
That would surely be cheaper than actually re-gearing the transmission and would probably have the same net effect on sales. :p
Yea, because Yamaha would NEVER do that.

Quick question for those who have had both GEN 1 and GEN 2's. Could you feel a noticible difference in the gearing of those bikes? Did cruising in 5th at 80 feel noticible more relaxed on the GEN 2 than on the GEN 1?
I had an 05 and a 08 sitting in the garage together for 3 years and did a lot of comparisons between them. Yes, the 08 felt more relaxed at any highway speed but it also had a smoother engine and slightly longer wheelbase which could contribute to a more relaxed feel at those speeds. I think the FJR would benefit from a slightly higher (3%) 5th gear but I think that any higher gearing would hurt performance and may actually decrease gas mileage.

Looking pretty hard at one of these.... The new updates sound pretty nice, although I'm curious about the suspension upgrade, which was one of the biggest changes for the better on my 05.... What are/will the options be to replace the rear shock on this new bike..? Or are we going to have to wait it out to see what comes down the pike...

So far - very interested, but may just have to hold off for owners reviews..

There are going to be alot of farkles needing to be redesigned which will take some time, I saw what looked like a lot of factory accessories that Mama Yama didn't necessarily offer before.....

My 04 wasn't bad but I found myself looking for a 6th gear. I don't do that in the 08. I also like the power delivery better, seems to have a better top end with the longer gears. For me the FJR is a sport bike that is more comfortable and happens to be able to carry a bunch of stuff and a passenger comfortably. Ash wants it to be a R1200RT with heated seats.

I met up with some Canadians here in Idaho a month ago and we did some riding. 2 had FJR's one a BMW. One of them with an 08 FJR was telling me he almost never uses 5th gear. I said "unless you're on the highway?" and he said, no, I almost never use it at all. He said he likes having the motor revving higher and doesn't mind the vibes. He said once to prove a point he burned an entire tank with the other guy on the FJR riding together and he never used fifth once, including a lot of highway cruising, and that at the end of a tank he burned "less than half a liter more" in gas than the same bike that spent most of the ride in 5th.

Hey, I've had poutine, aka heart attack on a plate, and it's not bad!

This is very interesting and encouraging. I'm ALWAYS looking for 6th on my '04 but if that has been adequately addressed on the GEN 2's and 3's then one of my biggest gripes has been addressed. I don't care about the number of gears as much as where the one's it has are placed, and on the '04 the 5th wasn't cutting it.

Thanks!

I will know if the Penske fits as soon as i get my 13 on the lift......

So now I've spent way too much time today looking into this. No mention at al of these extra cats in the FSM. I've seen the cats (removed even) in the collection box underneath the bike, but never any of these ones that are supposed to be in the mufflers.

I did find several places that make that statement though; that they are supposedly in there. What's really strange is that the 1st gen mufflers cost exactly the same amount as the second gen ones. If there really were cats in there, don't you think that would drive the cost up? Then again at 696.80 each... they could probably afford to include the cats.

Still, I don't see how cats would work back there. The exhaust would be way too cool for them to ever fire up and do anything. Besides if the exhaust has already been through the forward cats, what's left to burn?

My 2008 definitely feels more relaxed at speed than my 2004 did, and the tach shows it. Somewhere around 400 RPM difference at 70mph if my memory serves me.

Not to mention I don' think Yamaha's product liability specialists would want 800 degree heat sources out there where anyone could immolate themselves with.

Yeah... so what gives? Is this just another Mamma Yamma urban legend?

Who has ever seen the cat inside an FJR muffler?
Why else would Gen II exhaust be heavier? Somewhere, Yammie stated they added Cats to each exhaust.
wow. That makes no sense. Just for the hell of it? Cats are added as an emissions requirement...so you get cleaner exhaust on Gen 2s with no sig price increase for an expensive item that wasn't required on a Gen 1.

This smells funny...and I don't believe it. No pricing logic to it at all.
