"I'd personally suggest the finish line. Many riders have a game face on and don't/won't have time for chit chat at the checkpoints and as the starting time approaches."

Thanks for the advise, I definitly do not want to be "in the way".

I remember at a past IBR, where certain participants enjoyed a Portillo's hotdog at a midwest checkpoint. :D

Damn that hotdog tasted GOOOOOD!

Supposed to be two or three Portillos opening in Phoenix area in early 2013!

:yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

I think Portillos is the only thing I miss from living in Illinois. For me, it has to be the Italian beef, dipped. Oops, drooling.

So I just got my IBA Calendar, and I look at the dates for July, and it has the Pennsylvania start on July 1, but then it lists a Checkpoint 1 back in Pennsylvania on July 4, followed by Checkpoint 2 in California (Northern?) on July 7 and then the longest stretch back to the finish on July 12 in Pennsylvania.

Very interesting, and I look forward to being at the California Checkpoint next July 7, which is a Sunday for anyone following along.
Seems like that would give "some" the time to do the long dirt road to Goose Bay. Interesting.

Any work on rally HQs yet being released to the public?
Work? I'm sure there has been.

Actually released....I don't think so.

If it's important you know as soon as it's public I'd suggest IBA Premier membership. They tend to disclose to riders and staff first, premier shortly before the public, then the public.

In 2009 there was a checkpoint about 25 miles from my barn, up in Santa Ana, CA.

I had the joy of hanging out for a couple hours, starting just before sunset. What a treat!

I was like a farm boy at the circus for the first time. I had enough sense (barely) not to bother the riders as they rolled in, but I got to take lots of photos of aux lighting, fuel cells, hydration systems, and well-appointed cockpits -- along with cracked plastic, bug entrails, and leaky final drives on a couple...er... German machines.

I felt like I had a day-pass to Mount Olympus and was in the presence of the gods.

Oh. I was.

Looking forward to visiting them again on 7 July.

Retirement sucks.

What time do the riders usually hit the road for the start of the rally? First this in the morning is is it later in the day? Canadian FJR
When Warchild tells them they can start!

Don't know if it's the same every time but according to Warchild's post on the "Inside View" thread, the 2011 began at 10:00:00AM PDT.

Thanks guys. Once I find out where "there" is I plan to arrive the day before and then head south for a few days before heading back on the 5th.

Lisa posted the following on the IBA website today regarding the IBR start location:

We'll release that info soon so stay tuned! And YES it is a lot of fun for spectators.

thanks for asking-

Lisa

I recommend seeing the start of the IBR if you get a chance. It is really exciting seeing all the bikes head out. The riders will not mind you walking around to check things out, but as indicated, just keep in mind that the riders will have a lot of things going on and may not have the time to chat. That said, please make sure you stop by and say hi. I made my "lifetime" forum friend just prior to the start of the 2011 IBR. LowandSilent pulled his rear drive off his bike and swapped it for the leaky drive on my bike. Still one my coolest memories of the 2011 IBR! Met several other PNW forum members as well...super people!

Many of the riders at the finish will arive at different times. Still interesting, just not as exciting as the start in my opinion.

Any clue to a check point in northern Ca.? If any assistance needed there might be able to help out. P.M.
The specific location hasn't been released yet. When they do--it will be here. Or to Premier members probably a bit before that.

Thanks for the updates folks. Any spectators or rally riders that are interested in splitting a room the night of June 30th and/or July 4th let me know. PM me and we can sort out the details.

Looks like this is in my back yard this year since I'm now living in Pittsburgh. I should be able to make it over the the start/finish area, and it's always amazing to follow the progress of the rally.

Hurrah to "Shirt off my back" kind of friends and I have heard many such stories over the years (well since I first discovered the IBR in 2007) and of course I remember that story from the 2011 IBR. Adam is Cool peeps!! Kudos again to Adam.
