Hypothetically you would think there is a way to repair a speedometer unit to correct the reading.

When the cluster had to be replaced on my 03 I asked about it and the dealer said it would have to be sent out and I didn't feel like waiting so It read 16k less than reality.

Mike, buy it, register it here at my house and ride that thing home. When you hit 7500 miles, get a California plate. Easy.

I bought a Yamaha Virago 1100 with 520 miles on the clock from my Nephew in 1995. He lived in NC so I had the bike titled to me at his address and paid the fees. I rode the bike to PA where my Mother lived, rode it around there for a week and had it shipped to CA. Upon arriving in CA I went to DMV with NC title and registration. They looked at the bike and recorded the vin and mileage. I paid the title and registration fees and was issued CA lic. plate. No sales tax.

If the bike was titled and licensed in AZ you could ride it for the season and put on the needed 7500 miles and take advantage of the $$'s paid in AZ. There are a lot of AZ plates on the roads in CA and unless you are stopped by LEO no one will know.

California, like most other states agrees to the vacation house principal. My dad lived in San Diego from 1986 until he passed in 2012. In 2002 I wanted to give my dad my 97 Lincoln instead of trading it in. I also wanted to take care of all the costs (license, registration, insurance, and repairs). So I called the California DMV and the Illinois Secretary of State and told them that I live in Illinois but spend winter vacationing in my dad's house in San Diego. Both states said that I could keep the car licensed and registered in Illinois and garage and drive it in San Diego as my vacation car. The only ones that I needed to be more careful with was my insurance company as I wanted to be sure that they knew the car was garaged and driven in San Diego as well as that my dad would be an additional driver, so if there was an accident they couldn't accuse me of lying to them. This worked out fine for about eight years until we gave the car up on cash for clunkers and bought a new car in San Diego. The dealer in San Diego made me register the new car in California.

FYI, I am located close to this bike, I texted and called the number and left a message, no response. I did not see it on the current CL listing either for OKC. Me thinking its a spoof now.

Well, spoof or sold, maybe it's a relief not to have it dangling out there for me. Thanks for checking, and thanks for all the ideas, but they all had some kind of complications to overcome. For simplicity, I liked 101stpathfinder's idea the best, but even that fell short.

Trouble is, now I'm thinking hard about some other GenIII. Don't have one in mind yet, but liking the thought.

I don't know how long this thing will last, but the buyer won't be me. Or any other Californian. Freaking California! I didn't think about the Cali-only restriction about buying an out of state bike with less than 7K miles on it. Can't register it here. Damn.
Or do a REALLY long fly and ride. Put on 7k miles before going back home

A heck of a "Test" ride prior to official purchase!

What about a 3rd party "Purchase" with a transfer once the extra mileage is obtained?
Interesting thought. My brother lives in Oklahoma City, you know.

I suppose we'd both have to pay tax on the sale, of course. Damn, still sounds pretty complicated.

If you have the bike titled to you and licensed in OK you will not have to pay sales tax in CA. You need to have all the documents showing your name and address outside of CA. That is important in order to get around the sales tax issue. Before you further consider an out of state bike, check with DMV to see if they will let you bring a late model bike in that is not CA certified. That gas tank vapor thingy!!

Update: I got a text back from the number on the CL ad.

"Yes it is. Sorry I missed your call and text. I do not give my phone top priority. I will try to do better if you are interested in fjr."

I answered I would be interested in looking at it.

Still sounds spoofy. Put ur bike up for sale and don't pay attention to the phone u listed?
