I would guess that some folks may want to roll in a couple of days early to do the Cabot Trail on the way through. I'd be happy to guide that one.

It's a good thing that KJ didn't see that thread..... On one of the posts it looks like a FJR is falling over. Good thing that guy doesn't ride like that anymore?

Yes, I was riding with the 'tipsters group' that day (@Nerds) but thankfully my bike was far enough away from the domino's.

(top of the incline) 0Face -> Steamer -> Charlie Hoss -> |sm. gap domino stops| Yamafitter -> TopSpeed -> WineGuy (way down and out of pic). Steamers bike took the grunt of it, Charlie? mainly got a helmet and shield rash. 0Face made good with Steamer, haven't heard from Charlie. Hope my ole buddy still has a pulse!

K, Back on subject..

The Cabot Trail is so close to N.Sydney (where we catch the ferry) it would be crazy not to include it in our pre (or post) rally ride. So I purpose (to the Canadian board members) we include a buffer of days prior/post to play just 'under the rock'. Disregard the start/finish and texts on this googled map...

So after mucho mapping strategy last night, I came up with my schedule which wraps the rally. If the rally is held weekend as the fulcrum then my group will just be there early and leave a day or so early (shifted). No biggie if the dates are centered on the weekend but more mid week would be more suited for those pre-riding, plus the rally hotel should be the cheapest as well on mid-week... 'jus say'n (as Don S. would say!)

Our NY (and at least one Ontario bro) tentative schedule.

Sat early am; Departure; destination lodging ~ Gorham, Sargents NH area- Prob outside as hotels are pricey there. (non slab 396mi)

Sunday; to Mt. Washington NH..smell the Mtn air (weather pending) to ~ Amherst NS. (non slab 484mi)

Mon; ~Amherst NS to Cabot Trail loop (some slab 200mi), Cabot Trail Loop (185mi or 297Km) then lodging in N. Sydney. w/ many stops on CapeB I'm thinking a late one till our heads hit the pillow in Sydney. 6 hr ferry ride upcoming, we can nap then too I'm hoping.

Tue; catch AM ferry, arrive at CFR hotel Tues nite. Get screeched in, kiss the cod n drink!

Wed-Thur; Ride the Rock

Fri-Sun return home with more sidebars possible including maybe more of the trail.

So with this (tentative) schedule. We would have 3 nites of great Canadian brew and u'alls company on the rock, 2 full days riding the rock and 3 surrounding days each way. It's very early, but this sounds like it will be close to our plans.

A little playing on the Cabot Trail is a requirement. There are a number of other scenic roads on Cape Breton as well. On the way there (or back) you should take the (coastal) Sunrise Trail between Amherst NS and Antigonish NS - nice ride.

For USA riders, it has just been announced that the ferry will be running between Portland Maine and Yarmouth Nova Scotia next year. No idea about ticket cost but provides an opportunity to ride the Nova Scotia south shore. Heavily tourist travelled but very scenic.

I would suggest that you consider a little more time on the Rock. Its a BIG place and lots of miles to get from one side to the other. Its not big on twisty roads but that's not really the attraction of Newfoundland. There are lots of very worthwhile excursions and interesting coastal routes (+ people, food and culture). I have ridden a lot on the island and would not go with plans to spend anything less than a week.

I have to agree with RossKean there.... you are really short changing yourself on the island. I am figuring at least two weeks on the island. Not counting the time to get there and coming home.

Well that and we have, almost family there that won't be able to leave without visiting!

Sunrise up to Cape George and into Antigonish

A little slab to Cape Breton and then the Cabot Trail

When doing the Cabot Trail - you must do Meat Cove

PS: Has hotel rooms been blocked out yet for us?
I was waiting for an official date per your previous post regarding waiting to see the 2014 ferry schedule.

How many rooms d'you reckon we'll need?

Griff
). Let's lock the date for Aug 14 - 17, 2014 and we'll sort the other stuff out at a later date. With this much lead time the ferry will not be that much of an issue.
You did see this post..... Right? eh?

Well CFR will definitely be out for me as my plan is to combine EOM and NAFO next year.
And why can't you do both? They aren't in the same month!
Maybe if I had unlimited time off like you y "El Burrito Ballerina", ese!
Mi Amigo Tomaso, tus Papa Chuy Viejo definitely didn't see those dates of August 14-17 of 2014 either! If those dates are indeed locked in, then Miss Donna and BeemerDonS will be at CFR on 'da rock' eh! Seth will not be able to make it, he'll be back in High School because Chandler is on the Quarter System.

Donna and Don were always going to fly in for this CFR anyway, an August date for CFR-14 will work out just fine for the two of us. Name the hotel, we'll book rooms!

I agree that I "should" allocate more days to the rock, but... There's only so much time I can take off from my business. If only I was retired like da'fitter ..then hell yeah!

So I can maybe squeeze out 4-5 weeks summer vaca time and I wanna hit 6 rally's this year...

May 1; SEO Marietta OH

Mid June; Easy Ed's NERs Southern Tier (ny)

July; MOA Minneapolis

Aug; CFR Newfy

Sept; NAFO LaCrosse

Sept; EOM MaggieValley

Holy fawkkkk... I need more time! ...say, can u retire in your mid 40's and collect minimal SS? Lmao... Oh well. I know one thing, if I do all 6 there will be no Debbie when I get home.

Yeah ... that fitter guy has way too much time off.... Other than the Newfoundland trip I don't any of them being anymore than a long weekend. All rallys end on saturday night really so getting on the road sunday morning shouldn't be a problem. Marietta , Minneapolis, LaCrosse and Maggie Valley are all only day rides home.

Something like this?

I'll offer up an option...... take the Canadian FJR suggestion.....Sunrise, etc to Cape Breton. At Port Hawkesbury, go north on 19 to Port Hood, carry on to Mabou, go SE on 252 which is the best twisty road in Cape Breton, I think, with good pavement, then up 395 (which has quite a few rough spots) to SW Margaree, then on up to Margaree Harbour if you want, turn around come back down 19 to 105. Good day ride, and stay at the Cabot Trail Motel (restaurant on site is good). Staying in Baddeck too expensive. Next day do Cabot Trail counterclockwise, St. Margaret Village as a minimum, Meat Cove is an adventure on the gravel road, come back and go to Cheticamp for lunch. After lunch, go back on Cabot Trail clockwise to the motel........ another good day ride. This gets you seeing more of the SW portion of Cape Breton, and the Cabot Trail both directions.

Weather can be iffy for rain/fog (might be ok in August) so my advice is to plan an extra day or two...... if it's poor weather on the trail, alternate ride is the Bra's D'Or Lakes region from Baddeck, Sydney, Hwy. 4, etc. that will loop you back to the motel. You could do another loop down to Fort Louisburg if you're into the tourist thing (another day). Anyway, the idea is to have an alternative day so you can catch good weather for the Cabot Trail. Total rain day, tour Baddeck and the Alexander Graham Bell museum. Still no luck, and out of time, go to CFR on the prescribed dates, and do the Cabot Trail on the way back. I'm jes sayin' IMHO no sense doing the Cabot Trail in the fog/rain, it's a waste (BTDT). Track the weather for a few days ahead to see if there's a pattern, of course it's more accurate the closer you get to day of arrival. Weather could be different on the trail vs. other areas.

And all this needs a tie-in to meet the ferry schedule out of North Sydney. I'm with Tom, you'll enjoy this if you take more time..... hope everybody can get enough time off. Of course, I'm retired ********, so I can do anything I want......
