I love my FJR. I love the new 2016 Blue FJR. However looking on kbb.com my 2013 FJR is worth about 7,500 trade in. So that means I have to come up with 10k out of pocket to trade.

OR..........................I could keep my 2013 FJR which is a perfectly good bike. Then take less then 10k and get one of these:

The finish on the black rims for my '14 are ****. I can scratch it with my fingernail. A good coat of NuFinish wax seems to provide some protection, but it's like pissing on a house fire. I'm also planning to use that blue painter's tape when I remove the wheels or perform service. I hope the '16 rims have a better finish on them. I definitely like the black color better than the Gen I/II silver/grey.

 
Okay, so it's super soft like the black paint Hardly uses. Maybe stripping and powder coating is the long term solution then. Too bad a can't even afford a '13 at the 1/2 off trade in value of $7500.

 
Another option is to paint the wheels up with PlastiDip or something similar....

That stuff can take a beating and still looks good....

Next time you take off your wheels give it a shot, nothing lost there either, you don't like it or want to change colors down the line, just peel it off and go again....

I had my 15's wheels repainted blue from my buddy at the body shop, and its holding up well..

But it still can scratch so I use the painters tape for calipers and wheel removals.

I'm sure nothing is going to change in the paint process for the 16.

Just what I'm waiting for, all those Gen 3's to come up for sale at below market value and then for the Canadian dollar exchange to get somewhere reasonable... right now would cost an extra 35%.

Or, do what I and several members on here have done, remove the paint on the edges and polish them. It's tedious, but the finish underneath is actually machined and has a nice satin finish to it.

Only problem with that pcarnut is that when you pull the calipers from the front wheel without protection on the center portion of the rim they scratch the paint..... which is where painters tape will help protect from that...

LMAO - that would have to be the worst color choice I could think of for wheels...

 
I sort of liked the old gray colored wheels. It was a lot harder to tell if/when they were dirty, and the paint didn't chip so easy as the black does.

Plasti-dipping the rims sounds like fun. You could change your color at every tire change.

I've nicked the edge of a rim but not the center section. The edge that is machined extends up to the spokes, not sure how one scratches that close to the center. One trick I use is after removing the two retaining bolts, I slide the caliper back about 1/2 inch and then firmly twist the caliper outwards, this has the effect of pushing the puck into the caliper and giving you room to twist the caliper out without hitting the rim. And as you say, a strip of tape on the edge does the trick too. And now back to our regularly scheduled program...

Black rims-the gloss black finish on my '03 seemed to hold up really well, on the '14 with the little mileage I have on it, show more wear than on the '03

Thinking that a silver or natural aluminum color rim would be better long term.

 
Will definitely be trading my '13 for a '16, but cannot believe that they still haven't installed a TPM system. How much could it cost for that very important feature that just about every other current ST bike has?


Very important feature? To you maybe. I couldn't care less. Amazing to me the "ONE thing" folks can obsess about to make, or break whether the bike is good or not. TPMS, self-cancelling turn signals, 6-speed tranny......... whatever. Minor factors to the overal FJR goodness.

Yeah yeah... tank trim... side panels, whatever. They're black not blue.
...yeah, but if you're keeping your red bike...what does it matter?
It doesn't matter even if I wasn't. But I am. I don't even mind that my '14's side panels and tank surround wrap thingee are not colored (they are silver)

And on this 6 speed v. 5 speed issue, how can it not be better to have more choices? You want your engine to run in the sweet spot for maximum gas mileage (that's why we ride FJRs right?

). More gears means more road speeds that will match up nicely with engine speeds.

My Tundra's got 6 speeds. The Prius has a continuously variable torque splitting drive.

Five speeds just seems totally underwhelming.

You are SO right!!!! Six speeds is SO much better than five. So why stop there? If 6 is better than 5, than 7 will be better than 6! Or even 8!!!! Surely 8 speeds would be the best! Or maybe even 9??????

 
I know there were a few racing motorcycles

that had up to 18-speed transmissions.

I looked but couldn't find any references.

 
I left the FJR fold last year after owning FJR's from 04 to 14. I always prayed for a 6 speed each year. Not to put an extra gear in the same spread of ratios as the 5 but to simply put an overdrive over the top current 5th. That seems to be exactly what Yamaha did. Not sure why they needed to even mess with the existing 5 ratios, but maybe they know something.

If I ever decide to get out of ADV bikes (S10) and back into Sport-Tourers this FJR would be at the absolute top of my feature/reliability/value list. I love it!

Well, my car has a 7 gear transmission....

Yamaha made one of the few changes that could actually affect the way the FJR engine scoots and cruises and it might not feel like an improvement to me. I would really have to ride one before even thinking about buying one. I did like the '14 ES I rode just like it was. If Yamaha had done less I could be putting down a deposit on a '16, but not now. Off to see if that $14k zero mile '14 ES is still available....

Edit: Grrrr, apparently it sold during the last two weeks while I was waiting for Yamaha to announce the '16 model. And, sold for less than $14k.

Well, each to their own, but there's a reason a TPM system is available on most ST bikes and if Yamaha is trying to play catch up they should have addressed that IMHO. If I'm riding along and something feels a little squirrelly with the handling I like to be able to punch up the TPM and confirm that I'm not getting a flat and it's probably just the road surface--just good for peace of mind. Also, if you pick up a nail it's nice to get a warning so you can pull over and check things out before it goes flat and causes a dangerous handling condition. And like I said, how much could that cost to incorporate into the instrumentation? This is way more important than self-cancelling turn signals.

I would like to see it also. You'd think by 2016 they would have it.

I'd much rather see a warning light in the straight than feel it in the next corner.

With all the extra add-ons, when are we (and Mama Yama) going to address the ongoing weight gain??? (My '03 listed out about 80 lbs less than my '13)

Pretty soon, we really will need an added 'reverse' gear because it weighs as much as a Goldwing, or LT.

Then you'll have 7 gears (damnit)!
