An air bag, with all of the related sensors and cost, would be a negative for me. Keep it optional and it's a good thing for people who want them. I wouldn't even have them in my cars if they were optional.

hat is the thought of the new Headlights and Tail Lights transferring over to the previous Gen 3 models ?
Just curious as I know someone else will be asking....
Already speculated earlier. Try rereading the thread.

The helical gears in the transmission will likely mean a big change in how the transmission works.
The helical gears won't slide side-to-side and engage each other via the dogs.

There'll be another component with dogs controlled by the shifter which moves side-to-side and latches onto the helical gears.

I'm thinking that they may be referring to the primary gears between the crank and clutch basket of the new slipper clutch. In addition to not being able to shift like conventionally straight cut gears, helical cut gears produce an axial load on the shaft under torque, which they'd have to account for in some fashion. Not sure they had designed the original case to account for that axial load, but I sure hope so. I'm waiting for a parts fiche to be released to see if they've beefed up the casting in a part number revision since 2015, or perhaps an engine cutaway of a '16 model at a motorcycle show. Also, I'm imagining the mainshaft and layshaft are different to accommodate the six gears, so that might not bode well for the compatibility of adding a slipper clutch to an earlier generation model.

We'll see when they release some part numbers.

Skooter...it's not the size of the ears that counts...it's the smarts in the brain.

2016 is different from 2015...good for some, bad for others. Even if it doesn't fit neatly into a matrix, it is still an FJR. Hopefully they didn't screw the pooch with the 6 speed into 5 speed space.

Gen I owner: Cool, Gen IV already !!
Gen II owner: Cool, Gen IV already !!

Gen III owner: No, it's a 3.5 at best....(you need more than just minor updates like AN ENTIRELY NEW 6 SPEED TRANSMISSION to bump us down...)

As a lucky bastage who has ALL three (THREE OF THE FOUR) Gens currently in the garage.............

IT'S STILL A GEN III

All I gotta say is my 198k gen2 is much closer to being a collectible than the purty new 16 temptress..

Well then, from the tank back, the Gen II and Gen III are pretty interchangable. I call 2013+ a Gen II then.

Can we get a "Yamaha D-Eer Avoidance System" please?

I won't need it...... I mean, since I never crash why would I need it? But some, like that poor ******* "Goat fkr" Iggy might find it useful, or provide some sense of security.
Maybe you could use an airbag in your helmet. I seem to remember some nasty photos of your face ... and then there were also those photos when you crash landed on your face.

Carry on with whatever type of "manipulation, mental or otherwise" is most suitable to your demeanor.

Cool..and since you have ended the GEN argument and convinced us that the 2016 is in fact a GEN III, I guess I can plug that D-air system right into my own 2013 Gen III, right?

No.

You see your 2013 is the '*******' of the 3rd Generation FJRs. Lowly 80mph limit on the cruise control. A color that really isn't a color. And no option for the vastly superior ES version. It's an orphan.

However, there is still hope! With all that hot air and wind you blow, you could probably hook up that D-Air System to your mouth and ass and inflate those air bags in less than the 45 milli-seconds the normal system takes!

you are a sick bastage. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your bed tonite. That is all.

I am not in any danger of trying to get permission from the boss to get one of these, if they offered it in an 'AE' I would be screwed.

Safe for another year at least.

You like masturbating I can tell!

You can't interchange a rotor or a fork from a 2004 Gen 1 with a 2003 Gen 1. You can't interchange a Gen 2 2007 wheel with a Gen 2 2008. Does that make each different generations? No.

It's easy to find small numbers of changes, but you're glossing over the totality of changes (or lack thereof) in the 2016 as a platform. The redo points that Yamaha engineers reexamined the bike were the 2006 and 2013 model seasons. They stuck the things in wind tunnels and redid...the 2016 freshened some parts.

What's also very helpful for the FJR community of parts hounds is to have a rule-of-thumb for swapability of parts. And in no particular order the biggies as experienced over and over on this forum are things like windshield, seats, wheels, shocks, and add-on farkles. And the wheel one has caused confusion in many folks since it was a very narrow change in an otherwise static model. It's not going to be about clutches, transmissions, and computers.

BTW, I pinged Warchild and he said it's no way a Gen 4. I floated my "3.5" idea, but there was some virtual eye-rolling with that. I think he goes with the chassis/engine/interchangeability of common parts principle.

Edit: Now he's reexamining. He and I already have a $1 bet about interchangeability of the tail light assembly.

It will be interesting to hear Bounce's opinion if he decides to weigh in.

If I can summarize. If the tupperware is different that signifies the Gen shift.

Well my 09 Gen II with 65k miles was worthless when the Gen III came out. My Gen II just took another hit as many will want the 6 speed tranny. Of course I could get a lightly use 15 for a song now. Hey --G ya reading this!
smile.png

I will have to get a test ride this spring and see how the new tranny and clutch compare to my 09. Of course I can read about the first test rides on the forum.

In in 2018 I can find a lightly used 16 ES for a good price. All the new feature bugs should be know and worked out by then.

Of course the true gloriousness of the 2016 revealed in a test will depend upon whether the tester is planning to/has bought one.

<snip>I was riding along at highway speed quite happy in top gear, then I glanced at the gauges and was *shocked* to see I was in fourth and still had a gear to go
confusedsmiley.png
CC set at 80 on the interstate on the return leg of a day trip up north. Glanced down and found I was only in 4th. I really don't see the need for a 6th gear. I can take it or leave it. As others have said, real world long haul reviews from actual owners is going to decide the final worth of that upgrade.

LMAO - there are going to be some repercussions to that statement.... 2013 owners are going to be crawlin all over you about that....

Speaking of Ignacios inter changability....

What is the thought of the new Headlights and Tail Lights transferring over to the previous Gen 3 models ?

Just curious as I know someone else will be asking....
As a '13 owner, I'll allow it. Aside from the easy (but expensive) ECU fix for the CC limit, I'm afraid he's right.

Didn't see it mentioned in any of the other posts in the thread, but the tail-lights are definitely not going to be plug and play. Gen 3 has a tupperware strip going down the middle of the current assembly, the '16 doesn't.

Currently looking at stock photos of the '13 and '16 noses together and trying to find the 'redesigned cowling' mentioned in the press. Since they used the same language with the release of the '13, it may just be left over from previous releases. It's not like they completely rewrite those features from scratch every year. I wouldn't be surprised at all if someone was lazy and just cut and pasted.

Damn all the 'whiners' that got Mama Yama to install a sixth gear! (looks like they are copying Kaw) I love my 5 speed in town and on the freeway!!!

The rest of the updates are great! Shoulda had the lights LED from the '13. The slipper clutch looks like Kaw as well (but I like it).
