Glad to see the Broncos make it in, thanks to the defense. I can't wait to see how Carolina fairs against the #1 defense in the NFL. I'm thinking it will be a different story for Mr. Newton. Carolina will be around for many years so I'm hoping Manning can go out on top. No doubt this will be his last game and chance for another SB win.

The AFC championship game was a good game, for many reasons. First and foremost, because after all the Brady vs Manning media hype, they figured less in the outcome than many of the other less acclaimed players on both teams. It was a close match-up that remained undecided right to the closing minutes. And it was NOT decided by any officiating shenanigans, bad calls, or catch / no-catch interpretations, IMO. As much as the announcers tried to poke the proverbial hornets' nest with the stuff about the tablets not working, it did not involve any whiny losers accusing the winning team of underhandedness. What it came down to was that the better defense beat the better offense, which is what football pundits have been saying is true for decades.

Payton didn't look very good, but that is mostly because his body is old and he can't play to the level he used to. Brady didn't look very good either, but I credit the Bronco defensive intensity for that. The passes he did make were nearly always under pressure, and they forced uncharacteristic interceptions throughout the game.

Still, the game came down to a freak missed PAT early in the game being the difference between the Denver win and a probable tie and extra minutes. You couldn't ask for a closer match-up. Sure, it's disappointing to New Englanders that the Pats didn't advance to the SB after the treatment they've received over the past year. But they certainly proved their point along the way, and even in the AFCCC yesterday. And we realize that even a good team can't win it all every year.

And now the super bowl is likely to be another blowout with Denver on the short end of the stick. Carolina will be very tough matchup for the Broncos. I guess I'm rooting for Denver as a parting gift for Payton. He certainly has earned it over the years. But I don't think that is the most likely result.

Given that line of logic, and the closeness of the Broncos/Patriots game, wouldn't it be fair to say the Patriots would not have stood a chance if they won?

I'm hoping Denver's defense will make it an interesting game. I too would like to see Peyton go out on top, but it also would not upset me to see the Panthers take the trophy home.

That was in the back of my mind, yes. I guess my hope would have been that the less intense Carolina defense would have allowed the patriots offense more opportunity to score, and it would have been a high scoring shootout. Instead it will be a test to see if the Donkey Defense can shut down Cam.

Let's just hope there are a lot of good Go-Daddy and Carl's Jr. ads this SB. ;)

Hey, I beat The Cat two years in a row!

I did pick NE but did not root for them.

We're all picking the SB the same: Carolina

Good thought, doesn't work that way. Teams have their own unique coaching, unique sets of player skills and different game planning. Denver found a poison pill for the Patriots playing style, but will need a different pill for Carolina's planning and style, and then have the ability to actually deliver the poison pill as they plan/expect to.

Ideally, I'd love to see the Broncos top the Panthers, letting Payton slip away to probable retirement on top...he's earned it. Realistically, I don't see the Broncos prevailing unless Wade Phillips and the defensive squad can bottle Cam up like they did with Brady. That said, Broncos for the win! :D

In my opinion they could save the money on the halftime show and just show ads the entire time. The ads are at least entertaining. The concerts are generally..... always terrible.

Really... Coldplay, Beyonce, and Bruno Mars? :uhuh: Should be a good time to go make some dinner.
I've worked a couple Coldplay concerts. They put on a decent show. Beyonce and Bruno Mars both suck, so even if I happen to be watching this **** show, I won't watch those two idiots. The more I think about it, that useless game will cut into motorcycle time, so there's a 95% chance I'll miss it.

I'll be watching...and enjoying the football game and maybe a coupla commercials. Lots of Chicago Bears connections with the Carolina Panthers. I've also enjoyed seeing the little kids get the touchdown footballs.

I will be working that day, so no motorcycle time that day anyway. Will probably see some of the game but then, bring on the post game alcohol fights!

Do not like the Donkeys, but Manning is ok. The Panthers are okay, but Cam is show boating his way into 'wishing to see you fail' fast. Just be cool and hand the ball to the young players and call it good. Leave the other crap to lesser players.

The ultimate "showboat" tactic would be...no demonstration at all, as if to say, "Hey, I do that all the time. That's why I'm paid XXX $million a year. No big deal. It just comes natural to true superstars. That great play is what I expect and what you should expect. Nothing unusual at all. Doing my job well is certainly no reason to dance and prance and act like a juvenile idiot."

I respect humbleness. I was raised to disdain "showoffs" and still do. I suppose they do this to attract camera attention, face recognition and thus enhance their marketability to commercial sponsors.

I don't think I ever saw Walter Payton do a touchdown boogie or a chest bump or... He was truly great. He was pure class.

End of rant.

While it's true the AFC game was a thriller and the NFC game was a clinic, I think Carolina is going to rip Denver apart on both sides of the line. Their O-line is one of the best and their QB is this year's best in the NFL. But, if we knew the outcome there'd be no point in playing. As a NY fan, I LOVED the "!8 and Oh-NO!" Superbowl the Pats lost to the Giants.

What always surprises me is all the no-calls Brady gets. It seems to me he should have gotten a number of intentional grounding calls (at least 3, maybe 4), and Payton should have gotten at least one.

There are a lot of people whining online (other places, not here) about intentional grounding this year. I think this is just another case of the QBs taking advantage of exactly what is allowed them within the current rules. Sure, the intend of the intentional grounding penalty is to prevent the QBs from doing exactly what they are doing, throwing the ball away when they are under pressure. But the rules allow them to just throw it in the general area of any eligible receiver and there is no penalty. Since it is impossible to gauge "intent", I don't know a way to alter the rules from the present ones to eliminate all intentional grounding without the administration of the rule being 100% subjective. About all they could do to make the rule more stringent would be to place a distance requirement to the eligible receiver, but in most cases Brady just throws the ball at some eligible guy's feet, so it is legal now and would be then.

If you ask me, the spike play is intentional grounding. The QB intends to throw the ball into the ground. Is that not the meaning of "intentional grounding"?

But I'm an old man who doesn't much care for pro ball (and is getting jaded with college ball) since the sporting aspects of the game have been subsumed by the profit-making aspects of the industry.
