AE u-turns

What do I like about it?
  • I can flick up and down the gears unbelievably easily and quickly.
But can you do it 55 times in one minute? :p
Not sure why you ask "55", but yes. I can probably usefully change at well over twice in a second, so at least 120 in a minute. Sometimes if I accelerate up to traffic speed in 1st gear, I'll change to 5th, tap-tap-tap-tap, as quickly as my finger can move. It really is that quick, certainly much quicker than I could ever move my foot.

Not sure I'd ever want to actually change 55 times in a minute, though.

I agree. If I'm in twisties and having fun, I'm able to change gear up and down much more quickly and cleanly than I've ever been able to do with a manual change. It's as if you merely think "up" or "down", it just happens. And I can keep it up for as long as the curves last. (No innuendo, please, I'm too old for that.)

He's trying to smoke out whether an old windbag that didn't play well with the living wormed his way back into the forum. It's Friday early....and you're not likley the windbag formerly known as Downn2/Starcruiser/other aliases...fortunately. That's one down and about 19,000 to check! ;)
Thanks for the heads-up. I am certainly old, and a wind-bag, but not that one. One name's quite enough for me. Although I've been called many.

Too difficult to explain. And I should have written "55 times in 10 seconds." You'll have to read THIS post by a former Forum Asshat (no, not me) who opened up a BIG ol' can of dogpile concerning "speed shifting" an AE/AS.

It's a hoot to read.

Too difficult to explain. And I should have written "55 times in 10 seconds." You'll have to read THIS post by a former Forum Asshat (no, not me) who opened up a BIG ol' can of dogpile concerning "speed shifting" an AE/AS.

It's a hoot to read.

But it does rely on the throttle being set suitably for each change; if the "new" gear's engine speed is wrong, the clutch will engage relatively slowly. Hence the ability to change gear smoothly in mid-corner (whether that's a good thing to want to do is another matter).

In normal riding, it's difficult to move the throttle fast enough to keep up that sort of rate

The funny thing the original genius poster didn't seem to grasp was that flicking the switch 55 times in 10 seconds had NO real world application.

Assuming the FJR had a 55 speed gearbox, then one could be in top gear in 10 seconds. :blink:

I'm really not sure what the fuss is about --- there's really nothing to it. Like someone said earlier, you do it without even thinking about it with a little bit of rear brake in place of the clutch. It's a piece of cake. The people who make an issue over it have most likely never even straddled an AE, much less owned one. The AE is an incredible bike, period.

Sometimes I use 2nd gear, sometimes I ride the rear brake. It all depends what I feel like doing when the situation comes up. "Flicking" through the gears with the throttle nailed is lots of fun. I never use the foot shifter!

Way to go Flicker but I did ya' one better, I took the foot shifter off! (it's rather unecessary when you're missing your left foot...)

Me too, but I did it because dropping all that weight makes the FJR handle much better and dramatically improves gas mileage. :rolleyes:

[SIZE=12pt]Excellent point, palerider, I have noticed an improvement...and as far as u-turns go, I simply put my sharpened pegleg down, roll on the throttle, power pivot around and off I go. :yahoo: [/SIZE]...not really, but sounds neat, eh? Practice makes u-turning easier.

I never use the foot shifter either. No wait!, I thing I used it once in three years to put it in first one time getting it into the garage after a wash! :rolleyes:

No no, that's okay. I actually chewed it off in Rapid City one night (long story), those coyotes are everywhere...yuk, yuk :yahoo:

Me too, except after I had an event, when my finger-flicker switch broke. [Edit] Picture below doesn't actually show it broken, thought it did when I first posted. Sorry.

Thanks for sharing. I read your original post and, along with incidents in my own past, it helps me become a better rider. THINK, THINK, THINK!

BTW, I'm orginally from Norfolk but have lived in the States since 1956...bigjimbiker :yahoo:

 
I did not know mine had a foot shifter thingy...

And I have had my AE on the track two times.. With proper throttle modulation for any maneuver it is smooth like butter and instant change up or down..

For UTurns, I left it fully engaged.. (or popped the throttle until it engaged,, then slowed.... Lift your head up high and look over your shoulder.. the bike will follow at an idle with the bars at full lock.. Push it down motocross style and you can drag a peg at idle in circle all day long.. The AE will turn tight as hell if you love it back!

Jes sayin

The worst thing you can do to an AE is wad it up by tossing it down the road 275 feet letting it swap sides a few times.. Takes FOREVER to get all the parts picked up
