Putting myself in your shoes boots, as I have thought about this same scenario with Old Yeller, is get rid of the Dakar.

Here's my reasoning. I understand the need to get rid of one of the three of YOUR bikes, in the event your wife gains an interest in getting one she can call her own. The '08 is a great bike for when the two of you want to ride 2-up. And the '05, like OY, is getting long in the tooth, BUT is proven to be quite dependable (other than a recharging issue) and would be used exclusively for daily commuting. At least that is what I have predetermined will most likely happen to OY. Our bikes with their mileage "issue" wouldn't generate much interest nor would they do much to offset the costs of a new 3rd bike. But it's been paid for ions ago and works just fine, but only you can appreciate it's remaining worth.

And when she finally does give up the ghost, you part her out. That's my .05 worth.....I'll bill you later.

Only trouble with parting it out is that there is a limited market for 200,000 mile mechanical parts. (I'm not going to buy engine/starter/water pump etc from a bike that "used"). Body panels and tank might go for a few bucks to somebody who is planning to repaint (or doesn't care about the "patina" earned in a lifetime of riding).

I'm to a point with my bike that the local dealer almost laughed at me when we discussed trade-in value at near 120,000 miles. My best bet is to get a couple of thousand for it by selling it to someone local who knows the bike and how I cared for it. Maybe in a few years...

Tony,
How is the 05 running at this point in time?
Rough- I am having a throttle issue that started after a FAST starter replacement… possibly just a pinched fuel line or something of that nature.

It is running well enough for me to trust it on another 10/10ths though.

And Mike, That is the direction that I think I am headed. If I could just let go of that Dakar!

Cool. If that issue started right after working on the starter then I'm sure it's just something stupid going on.

Get that fixed and keep it for loading the miles on, or sell it for $2k.

Look Tony, if it's just a matter of needing more garage space, or a "out-of-sight out-of-mind" thing, you could store it up north.

How do you think it might handle in the snow?

Actually, that's a great idea (in reverse). Sell it to someone from up north and as part of the deal, make arrangements to have it stored locally. Personally, I would love to have a spare bike in a warmer climate that I could "visit" during the winter.

Mike -

This is an option I am considering with the Dakar. There are actual places to ride it up there and I have mega storage available in Iowa.

I am up there quite often for visits too… hmmm… I think you might be on to something there.

I owe you another "Like" - I have used up my quota for the day.
