It's illegal for riders to work on bikes in the pits (except Buells).
That is not true. You can have 5 people working on the motorcycle. Nothing in the rules says a rider can't be one of the people working on the bike. You can have 6 people over the wall as long as one of them is holding a fire extinguisher and not working on the bike.
The Speed announcers were adamant that he couldn't, which is where the confusion came from. I dragged the PDF of the rule book off the site and saw nothing that says he can't be one of the guys working on it. Like I said before, the only mention of rider in the pit procedures section is that he has to dismount for refueling. The fact that the AMA official had his face right in there, too, should have made it clear.

Maybe that's why they need the delayed coverage, to look up the rules before they go on the air. . . . .

Yep..., I should know better than to speak to the rule book -- when I certainly don't know anything about it... But, you'd think, among the SPEED crew, Mr. F. Spencer (no stranger to AMA racing) would know...? As a multi world champion, I wonder what his behind-the-scenes thoughts/comments were on how the race was managed?

I did, also, enjoy the close racing that happened -- but, somehow the drama seemed a little phony (too much official interference/pace car stuff, for me). I guess, tho, (the DMG thinking is:) if there isn't enuff straight-up competition -- then those 'tweaks' need to be put in place?

I was really glad to see both bankings being used -- that's the Daytona I'm used to.

THat was Greg White who is a complete moron as an announcer/reporter.

As you said, there was an official right there and yet, at no point through the rest of the race, did White bother to ask the official about the rules...

Greg White is dumb and annoying, but he's not half as dumb as Spencer nor HALF AS ANNOYING AS SHEHEEN'S ATTEMPTS TO MAKE THINGS EXCITING BY YELLING ABOUT THEM!

My favorite bald-faced lie was "the Buell's so good at tire management they're running the front for the whole race." *******.

I've been thinking about it and I'm really not sure I'm going to miss SpEdTV's coverage of AMA. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to watch the Saturday night insult at all. Eh, **** it, I haven't been following F1 very closely the last couple of years, I guess this'll make room for me to keep up with the semicages.

You know, even though I'd like bike racing to be successful on this side of the pond, I'm coming to the same conclusion. I usually watch F1 on Sunday mornings when doing some paperwork type chores. I may TiVo the AMA show and watch it when F1 is not on. But this format blows huge chunks and I'm not going to spend weeks away from race results just to support it. I think the whole Indy car saga of the last 10+ years should have been a lesson for DMG: If you ignore the fan base, the fan base can find something else to do.

That's how I feel, too. I'm simply not going to wait weeks to see a race. If DMG wants us (the fans) to embrace the new rules, new classes, etc., then they need to give us access to the races. I'm 'bout done with AMA road racing. Just about done...

WSBK is going to kick ass this year.

DMG and Miller Motorsports couldn't reach an agreement. So now the WSBK round at Miller will have ZERO participation from AMA. Nice work, Edmondson. You *******. Keep killin' our sport, too.

Yeah, I said that here.

And I agree with your sentiment. RE doesn't seem to understand that Daytona is part of the world, not the other way around. Reminds me a bit of Tony George in 1996.
