Just got finished watching Strategic Air Command on Netflix, One of my Favorite movies with Jimmy Stewart, In hour 1:25 there is a scene that shows a Vespa scooter parked under the wing of a Globemaster, Never noticed before. How cool is that!! Vespas were used in the Cold War. There is a B36 preserved at Castle Air Museum in Atwater Ca. I gotta make it up there to see it. What a Impressive plane that was. it was replaced by the B 52.

Last time I was there was in the late 90's. That was one of my 3 legs on a Solo X-Country flight. I didn't stay long enough to get much of a look at things.

That would be an excellent destination or stop point on a FeeJeR ride, though. I'm up for it.

The engine was used on some Navy aircraft betwen WWII and Korea, and the Museum of Naval Aviation at Pensacola Naval Air Station has one:

The F4U Corsair was tested with this engine, and produced in limited numbers as the F2G.

The AM Mauler was equipped with this engine, but was replaced by the AD Skyraider after only a few years of service, being a very heavy aircraft, and the Skyraider performed the same role much more effectively.

The P4M-1 Mercator patrol plane carried two of these engines, and the JRM-2 Mars seaplane carried 4.

The B-47 was a medium weight bomber, not medium range. It was made expressly to carry nukes to Russia. Period. It really had no other use.

And the B-29 had the highest range and payload of anything we flew in WWII, I think.

I flew there once in the late 90's also (flying out of Ried-Hillview in San Jose) and went through the outdoor museum they had and saw the B-36. Just amazing. The old base was like a huge ghost town, with a few things going on here and there, but mostly empty. And as hard as I tried to land long on that 2-mile runway, I still had to taxi forever to get to the first taxiway! And my Cessna 172 and the Archer on the ramp looked incredibly lost on such a huge expanse of concrete.

I rode right by Atwter in SPANK last year. So they've got a B36....very cool. I remember one at Pima in Tucson....restoring it if I remember correctly. It's a big sucker!

Is there any scenic riding up that way? (Atwater). dr
Oh baby! Go to Atwater and turn right! The gateway to Yosemite, Hwy 49 and the Lil' Dragon between Coulterville and Mariposa. All the Gold Country to cruise. Tioga Pass, Sonora Pass, Ebbett's Pass.

Yeah....LOT'S of riding! :yahoo:
