I checked ADVRider all ready. But I trust this group to give me thier honest and real opinion. I'm thinking of selling my 89 Honda Transalp and going with the GS8. I going to Alaska next year, hook or crook, before something happens and I can't. Too many friends with un-fulfilled dreams are dying or getting sick these days, I'm not waiting around any longer

Can't help you with your 800GS question but, if you decide to sell the Transalp, consider posting it for sale on the forum. I'd be interested in a Transalp in good condition and with relatively low miles (well, at least "low miles" considering it's a 20 yr old bike). For some reason, I like those bikes.

I too can't help with the F800, but I will say after hours of researching dual-sports I have decided to buy a KTM 990 Adventure. I test rode it and it seems to be a great bike for both worlds IMO. Now for the hardest part, convincing the wife.

Hey RoadRunner, have you been to Sandia BMW? If not, go see the sales manager Dean. He is a Hellavua nice guy and has let me ride a few of his bikes. I would bet he would put you on a F800GS just to get you to buy it. If you are gonna do it, gimme a PM and I'll give you my personal info and you can tell him I sent you.

One of our Boy Scout dads recently got one and loves it. Said they pretty much worked out some early bugs with the bikes delivered in Europe. fwiw, his previous bike and so main comparison was a single-lung 650 Beemer. I've not actually seen the 800 but his pictures were pretty. I sat on one at the dealer last Saturday and it felt great.

https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showtopic=112545 NMRoadRunner: On November 1, 2007 I placed a $500 deposit with BMW Motorcycles of Scottsdale for a new BMW F800GS. By November 21, 2008 both my F800GS and a silver F650GS Twin had arrived at the dealership. General Sales Manager Louie Franconi let me take them both out for a 15 minute ten mile ride. I came back and bought the F650GS Twin over the F800GS. It just suits me better for the type of riding that I do here in Arizona, down in Mexico and up in Alaska/Yukon. https://www.azbeemers.org/forum/index.php?t...312.msg7616#new Here is an example of a dirt road that I like to ride these days at age sixty. I have ridden the Mogollon Rim Forest Road 300 a hundred times since I moved to AZ twenty years ago on both my BMW R1100GS and Kawasaki KLR 650. This is ideal for the capabilities of the F650GS Twin and is probably pretty tame for the F800GS. If you are a very aggressive high speed off road rider then you want the F800GS for your needs.

https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showtopic=107221 Member Jayson of my BMWMOA Club AZ Beemers also made the same decision that I did, he had a chance to buy an F800GS but went with the F650GS Twin also for the same reasons.

Jayson and I both are riding our F650GS Twins to Real de Catorce in Central Mexico near Zacatecas in April. Please join us!!!

Hey CHRIS_D: Glad to hear that you are going with the Katoom Adventure. If I wasn't old and worn out I'd have a 990 too!!

Thanks for the input! I'll check out the 650GS before I plunk down my $$$$$$$$$. I looked at KTM's but know they aren't trouble free, that why they say KTM stands for "Keeps taking Money" All the review on ADV rider say they love them but don't how well they handel in really dirty stuff yet, they're afraid to dump them just yet!

Just curious what problems have you heard of? Especially in regards to the 990 or possibly the 950.

Still working on the wife so I don't know if it's going to happen or not. You know I could just come home with it :dribble: I'm sure she would either get over it or I'll be living somewhere else. Anyone have an extra room I could stay at?

Get the F800GS! Its a sweet looking machine.

Oh I have to give bimmer heads a hard time. Hell, my boss rides and older BMW and I give him crap all the time. Besides, this was more at a *** at the size of that thing. I would love to have a GS in my garage right now, but was wondering if BMW makes a bigger version, like a men's 1200cc version, I would consider it more.

Honestly if I had the cash, there would be a 1200GS in my garage. After riding one of those beasties, I'm in total lust. I'm still very worried about that whole final drive issue enough where I can't bring myself to take one into my home. Because I would want to rally with it, I would need to first know its a rock solid machine before I headed of on a rally with it.
