Anyone have a spare ignition switch laying around?

I think mine is going bad again.

06, has been repalced under recal, in fact I replaced it. That said, I didn't have any issues prior to replacing it so, doing the recal was simply a preventative measure.

Symptoms: Turn Key on, Gauges sweep, hit the starter, bike fires, then dies. Gauges are blank, no lights no nothing.

Cycle the key, and it may or may not work, it will either do the same or run just fine.

I've squirted this **** out of it with contact cleaner and cycled the switch but it still behaves like this.

Also my harness has not been replaced, I had a S6/7 failure that was repaird and the brodie harness was installed last summer.

Any advice?

Oh, the reason I'm asking the collective, is I'd really rather not get stranded during the upcoming Mason Dixon 2020 Rally. I'll call my local dealer tomorrow, but they are usually less than helpful.

Bike is out of warranty, so I suspect unless yamaha steps up I'll need to buy a switch this time.

Well, you could jump the fat brown and red wires to the switch and see if everything works . If so, the switch is bad..sounds like it is..

Now that I think about it, I also have Brodies, ignition switch bypass, circuit beefer-uper harness too. Hrm, ****, but I Think it's the contacts in the switch itself.

Before you replace the switch it sounds like what happens sometimes with car ignition switches years ago ( no current experience gave up locksmithing about 20 years ago ). If the key moves OK then it is probably a bad connection at the back on the switch or in the wire harness . First sometimes wire harness can get pulled and you have bad connections occurring, start the bike and move the handlebars left and right to see if that has an affect . then pull on the harness a bit . You may just find your problem .If its not there then it is probably a loose wire or fitting in the back of the switch ,these are sometimes held in place in by bend over tabs which work loose ,sometimes they are screwed in place with one way screws ( ie screws that a screwdriver can only tighten ) . If you are not confidant take the switch to a good locksmith , as quite often they have done it so many times before they know how to fix it fast . Hope that helps ,but remember I have not done an FJR switch .

I think I have a switch laying around. When I bought my bike five years ago, the previous owner had bought an extra switch. Shoot me a PM if you're interested and I'll dig in the garage to make sure it's still where I put it.

Thanks for the offers folks. I pulled my Brodie switch harness tonight and the symptoms are gone. Brodie let me know that some of the relays that he used had started failing. Good thing it's in a socket and will be a 5 second replacement, I'll get two and carry a spare
