We Stanley Boys are back in Barrio del Chandler, Arizona ese. 14 days and 4,100 miles spent with my best Riding Buddy: My Son Seth (15). Fabulous ride up teaming up with Fairlaner and FJRay for the final push to Castlegar. Then a fantastic time at NAFO/CFR 2012 with some truly wonderful folks.
3 fun days spent with Dr. Rich and Susan in Oak Harbor, coupled with going out Orca Killer Whale watching with best friends from Orange High School (1966) Dennis and Glenda McClintock aboard their 42' Grand Banks trawler "Princess Grace". Then two cheerful days spent with Friend Old Michael in Old Town Sacramento, what a Gentleman and a Scholar this man is. Finally we saw my Sisters and Mom in Orange, CA. Leaving for SW-FOG very soon now.
All pictures below were shot by Dennis McClintock, retired from International Harvester and an incredible photographer. Cruises to Alaska regularly.
Dennis is going to send his photo of the leaping Orcas to National Geographic, he has been photographing killer whales for decades now and he says this is the best shot he has ever taken of them. Luckily, Seth and DaddyDon were aboard the "Princess Grace" when they put on this incredible show!
We spent 2 hours idling off the Lighthouse on Stewart Island right on the water boundary line between Canuckistan and Estados Unidos. That is Mount Baker, Washington in the background with British Columbia off to the left. I estimate the dorsal fin on this big Orca to be between 8' and 10' tall.
You are legally prohibited from approaching an Orca killer whale no closer than 200 yards, but if they approach your vessel you are just required to maintain your position. For those two hours we were observing this incredible performance, they continuously swam under "Princess Grace" and leaping.
"Princess Grace" has made 5 previous journeys to Alaska up the Inland Passage, Dennis and Glenda are taking her up to Anchorage for a 6th trip in Summer of 2013. She has two Cummins 210 horsepower diesel engines turning twin screws, 1,200 gallon fuel capacity, 600 gallon fresh water capacity, 300 gallon gray water capacity, sleeps 8 and attains her best fuel economy at 8 mph. With four extra 55-gallon drums of diesel she can sail from Anacortes to Lahaina, Maui. Can carry a mizzen sail for extra propulsion if the wind is within 45 points off of her stern. True ocean going vessel.
