With gas prices heading north of $3/gal around our parts, I'm wondering if that will generate more interest and/or sales, as when it hit $4/gal.

I'm helping out our Mama Yamaha by buying my new Super Tenere, BUT: From Motorcycle and Automobile Industry Trade Magazine "Asphalt and Rubber", reprinted in BMW Owners News. 7.8% increase in the United States and a worldwide 15% motorcycle sales increase. If you combine the car and bike sales: BMW sales worldwide are up 21% over BMW bike and car sales in 2009.

"BMW November Motorcycle Sales Up 7.8%

HOME » NEWS » BMW NOVEMBER MOTORCYCLE SALES UP 7.8%

BMW Motorrad continues to shine in this down economy, as the company has reported a 7.8% USA sales increase compared to November of last year. For the rest of 2010, BMW’s sales have increased every month compared to last year’s figures, from January to November. In the same time period, BMW Motorrad sold 94,283 units internationally, up 15% from the 81,946 units sold during the same duration last year.

While it isn’t saying much that sales are improving over the devastating numbers from 2009, the motorcycle industry is still considered to be down by roughly 11%, which makes BMW still an outlier from the industry norm.

Perhaps more important than the continued bump is sales figures, is BMW’s report that it increased its total market share for motorcycles over 500cc in displacement. Revitalizing its model line-up and expanding into new market segments has paid off well for the Bavarian brand, which released the S1000RR superbike last year with strong success.

The BMW S1000RR has taken on the entrenched Japanese presence in the sport bike segment, and has shown that BMW can wade into unfamiliar waters with ease. With spurring sales and this confidence in its pocket, we’ll have to see what BMW does next with its motorcycle position.

Bluesy: if you need this translated into English, you will have to ask Fairlaner, Roger, Deb and Silver Penquin, I only speak American! BMW Sales are up in USA 7.8% from November of last year.

Worldwide Beemer Sales are up 15%, 81,946 Beemers sold in Sales Year 2009; 94,283 Beemers were sold in Sales Year 2010 on this planet Earth that you currently reside on. Bust is calling you!

I actually believe you are from Mars, FJRBluesman! BMW Factory ends their accounting Sales Years on last day of November each year. Do I have to explain motorcycle batteries to you too!?!?!?

On 2nd thought, there's no use in asking Fairlaner to translate this into plain English for you; even the other Brits can't understand him half the time, the half when he's drinking. 90%+- of that time!

I just saw where H-D is adding several new models and raising the prices on their CVO models. I guess H-D is banking on '11 being a better year. Hopefully this is true for all manufacturers.
I don't know, I haven't been to a HD dealer lately, butt I do get emails from 3 of the area HD dealers on events and whatnot (among all my MC junk mail!). I do notice they still got '09 stock left and offers to sell at greatly reduced prices. I've never seen that before.

Also, I know in Wisconsin, the union took a big hit on this last contract they signed to keep the work there instead of being outsourced to - I don't know where - and that wouldn't have happened if they had a position of strength as in business was good IMO...

I do hope that '11 is better for everyone, including the motorcycle manufacturers altho I know I'm not buying another bike anytime soon, much as I'd like to!

H-D is opening a new facility in India. They also used the threat of moving production to other US cities as a lever against the union. A city near me was one of the possible sites under consideration.

The Indian facility is supposed to be set up to build bikes from parts supplied by US factories. How long the parts will be supplied by US factories remains to be seen. H-D has already figured out that most US consumers will buy Chinese made H-D badged clothing marked with US flags and H-D logos. I'll bet it won't be long before Sportsters are being assembled in India or Brazil (the other country with an off shore H-D kit builder) and shipped back to the US.

As I understood it, the India location is only for bikes sold there, but I get your drift of possible things to come. On things made in China, for entertainment go into a HD dealer and look at clothes, accessories and even parts are packaged "Made in ..." as in not the USA. So, yes, you're right, the "made in USA" BS that lots of guys say about them just isn't true in alot of cases.

Makes me wonder about Victory, how much of their content is made here. Of course, I don't think their dealers are the motorcycle "Burdines" stores that HD dealers are unless it's a combined dealership. Just sayin'....

I lost a Yami dealer near me. He also had Kawi's on the floor. He had a large supply of accesory's and clothing. I am going to miss that. The other two Yami dealers have low inventory and are just holding on IMO anyway. Both of them have been around forever and one is family owned. Time will tell.

Dave
