I had my bike in for an 8000 mi service and when I picked it up I noticed the black plastic a/b/c/d panels were spotted and (in a few places) streaked white. They had washed the bike, and on the ride home I just thought they were water spots, but after taking them off, the white doesn't appear to be coming off.

It doesn't look like there's anything on the dash itself, or the blue upper fairing pieces, but the spots are also on the cover of the glove box.

Any ideas?

My '03 has had these since I bought it used. I thought it was just sun-fading, but it's never gotten worse or changed in the couple years I've had my bike. I recently tried everything I could think of to get these back black, but I was un-successful.

I would ask the dealer what sort of cleaner they used on these panels, and at thier shop test it on an inconspicuous space, say down beside the forks on the left side. If it was the cleaner they used, I'd be pushing for new panels and glove box door. And they should OF COURSE never use this cleaner again.

but something tells me they prolly just used soap and water. At least if you go in accusatory. Just ask because "it cleaned well, and I was interested in getting some of it." Until you get the name of the stuff.

I have no reason to believe one way or the other whether the cleaner had anything to do with it. I just watched the cleaner guy finishing up on the bike, they may have splattered something on it during the service. It's just odd that it's only the panels (and glove door), though.

How disappointing!

Yet another example of why service should be done yourself. :erm:

sounds like break fluid or coolant ,, you might ask if they opened your res or bled your breaks for some reason ,,

or they could have been splashed by someone other than the tech working on your bike ,,

this is the reason I have work done at a small shop ,,

and not at a dealer who has 20 bikes a week to work on

Brake fluid was my first reaction, but I just found it odd that nothing on the upper fairing or actual dash was affected.

I would try Plexus first, then the Meguiars Plastic cleaner then plastic polish. I would think one of these would get rid of the spots.

What about Mother's "Back to Black"?

This product has worked wonders for me in the past.

The "back to black" is good stuff, but doesn't re-blacken the plastic, just makes the white spots shiney. That was my first action.

This is crap, Woodstock, I'd be heading back to the dealer and politely state your case.

Be smooth, and you they just might man up and admit they must have done something. You shouldn't have to take what is a defacto devaluation on your bike just for rotuine service by the dealer.

Perhaps someone should inform MJ of this product? Do the also make 'Back to Human'? :D
