Some of you may remember me mentioning that a metric buttload of co-workers got layed off during EOM. Well I was on vacation and I'll be damned if I was going to call and found out if I got the axe and spoil my fun (they wouldn't have told me over the phone anyway).

So Monday morning I go into work and begin my day by logging into my computer. "Account Disabled".

Fugh.

I get marched up to HR and told that do to coporate greed restructuring my services are no longer required. Then I get escorted out of the building.

Its been cold and raining up here (3C) since Tuesday. WTFF do unemployed people do all day?! Nothing on the tube, and I think I'm current on every thread on every forum I belong too. I can't even go for a ride! WAH WAH WAH.

there is more to life than work

sucks about the job. I used to work for Royal Bank, then they downsized. That was, oh gawd, my daughter was 3 then. Suffice it to say, that was a looooooong time ago. This too shall pass.

the bitch of it is, it's uncomfortable to spend money...but if ya have some extra and can splurge some...go be a tourist in your area and see stuff you never had a chance to...I'm born and raised in Nawlins', so hooked up my IPod and went to the zoo, aquarium, rode the street car, rode the free ferry, went to the Chalmette Battlefield, went to some plantations, and enjoyed riding the bike to nearby attractions.

Also, I'm a movie buff, so hit the DVD rentals around and fixed lunch and queued up some movies old and new that I wanted to watch. Might want to join Netflix. I have cable TV, so the military, discovery, basic movie channels are OK most of the time.

I'm a reader, so watched Book TV, went to their website, and hit the library. I've found they will pretty much find a book I request with title, author, etc.

I dunno, get into that hobby you never had time for. Peruse the hobby shops. Get a young dog from the shelter and train it.

Take up jogging.

Brainstorming here as I'm retired since '02, but on fixed income. Same with me, money is tight.

Hope this helps some and wish and pray the best for you and your future. Don't sweat it, it will come.

And I've learned, worrying doesn't change a damn thing.

Mike in Nawlins'

https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showtopic=121308 Steve, jump on your moto and head to Phoenix and ride to Mexico with us, you would be the third Canadian on this trip. David - Dashbaw is leaving from Victoria this morning and Chuck "Frenchy" Doucet from Vancouver is already here in Scottsdale. Seamus MacTreinfhir from Dublin, Ireland is going, as well as Enrique "Henry" Garza from Magdalena, Sonora, Mexico; truly an International Ride going South of the Border!!!

Harassing forum participants with snide and or witty comments can pass time, as well as exercise the gray matter. ;)

Kinda cold how they just shut you down and shuffled you to the door!

I hope you can find equivalent or greater replacement income doing something interesting soon enough.

Hey Steve,

I'm really sorry to hear about this. Sure seems harsh the way they lay off people, very impersonal. The bummer of it is, when you are working you have the money but not the time for touring, now you have the time but not the money. I hope that something even better comes your way soon. Chin up, this recession will be over soon.

Aint that the truth? How about some volunteer work, to pass the time and boost the karma supply?

Volunteer to work as a teachers aid at the local school. That will cure you, not sure of what, but it will cure something. :)

Take your free time and money and invest it into your NEW job... looking for a new job. Spend the same time you did at your old job looking for a new one.

Holy shit, Steve! That sucks in its suckyness. :angry2: Unfortunately, in todays corporate landscape, what happened to you is not uncommon.

Hopefully you at least got some severance to get you through 'til you land your next gig.

Having been in your shoes before, yep, it really sucks. Keep the faith, though, brother - you WILL find another gig! It's a WHEN, not an IF! I'm a testament - I went from wondering if I'd ever work again (months and months of sending resumes, making follow-up calls, all that crap), to winding up at a really, Really big company that has provided opportunities for advancement and - thanks to the fact that we're both music geeks and the company has an orchestra - I even met my wife through work!

Maybe your local health department (or whatever you wacky Canadians call it) has an opening for Chief Booby Inspector, requiring you to visit your local gentleman's clubs. :yahoo:

Remember - no matter what the overeducated idiots may have thought of you, darn it you're a GOOD person and people LIKE you!

Andy

I love the way they "escort" you out. A loyal employee for years and they treat you as if you are a thief. I just do my own thing, screw 'em. Consult, network, and look at your options. I retired again for how long I do not know. Prior I started 3 companies that are going OK still.

You could go Bust-a-nut style, and shave your anus, and masturbate all day long. :D

Some good suggestions in there for occupying my time. I'm still waiting for my termination slip and my severance to show up in my account.

At least I had a weeks 'notice' (thank god for Facebook) to mentally prepare myself. The other 20 odd co-workers weren't given that luxury. Around 2002 we purchased by another company and one morning everybody shows up for work and their are about 50 cabs outside the building. Management seperates the staff.. anybody not in the cafeteria was put into a cab and sent home. Their were almost several fights as people just wanted to get in their cars and go home - but the company insisted on 'paying' for the cabs.

Now thats COLD.

I've been toying with going back into contract programming as I did it for 10 years prior to taking the job at this company (necessitated by Revenue Canada screwing me over). I did fantastic at it at the time. However, currently this towns largest employer is out on strike for the last 3 months with no end in sight. Support companies for this employer are going through hard times. All this is to say now isn't a good time to spend money getting back into contracting. But if something comes up.. hey!

If I had my druthers I'd sell off everything and start fresh somewhere else. Can't do it though. Mom lives with me and is a shut-in and cannot move her.

Mmmm Tennessee... Virginia's.. Carolina's... Kootenays... Cali... Nebraska is RIGHT OUT though.

After what I just went though, theirs nothing left on my brown eye to shave.

That's messed up...

I think I might be out celebrating my freedom..

Seriously, I think you're going to land in a much better job.

Hopefully soon....

Well then I now know at least 2 unemployed Steves!

Sounds like a conspiracy to me!!

Sorry Bros, I know it sucks the big one...

I've been off since mid-April and am kinda running out of "putter around the house" kinda stuff to do.....sorry, I'm not much help other than moral support.

If you have a wife, keep out of her way.

She isn't used to you being around all the time.

It's an adjustment for everyone in your home.

I speak from experience.

Good luck.
