Still, appreciated though I'd entertain the thought of moving to Elliot Lake. Nice place that I like a lot, and its still close enough to Mom's docs that I could accommodate it. Its not exactly a high tech hub though!

Those guys from Nova Scotia you can't trust some of them in a **** house with a spoon and are not the same as Newfies! They might be a little smarter though.

As for the high tech hub.......sure it is , we have color TV here now and there are rumours of phones with out the cords on the end. But I'm not really sure about the phone thing is true or not.

Steve Sorry to hear about your lay off; several of my family have been in similar situations recently so I have a vague idea of what you are going through. I think James Burnleigh's advice is spot on. Your current job is finding a job and networking, networking, networking is the key! And hey you are an outgoing personable guy, that should be no problem for you! I also think that change is usually for the better, so start looking around for your new 2010 FJR on the side...

Its true. Have you guys heard about 'fax' machines yet? I had esplained to me as a telephone with a waffle iron attached to it.

Oh, and your absolutely right about Newfs. Newf's are good people, salt of the earth types that would give you the shirt off their backs. Those Halifaxonionionians though, they'd steal the shirt off your back and charge you for cleaning it.

I have seen a few folks post their skills and requirements here and get a lead on a job. This place is a pretty good network for any good purpose.

True about using this place for networking, as I'm unable to move, its not really an option for me.

As for splitting wood, I'm in Northern Ontario and I've probably swung an axe 100,000 times splitting wood. While I can use the exercise, I've done my time... wait.. did you say beer?!

Funny you should mention that. I've got an appointment later this evening with a potential client. I'm afraid I'm about to be pushed back into a former line of work. It wasn't so bad if I recall, but the life of a man-whore does have it's downside.

Seriously, your point is well taken. Back a lifetime ago I was cabinet maker, high end stuff. I loved that, but can't do it anymore owing to exposure to of the 'fumes' of sawdust. I've changed careers a few times in my lifetime. Nothing saying I can't do it again as the situation warrants. In fact, I welcome it, being a programmer for the last 20 years or so has pretty much fried my brain.

Edit: at least your Italian and are known as Stef. It could be worse, you could be French and be known as Etienne.

So, with a skill like that you really could work for a company just about anywhere without having to move. Telecommuting is very common in the industry and even national boundaries are not a problem for some employers. Don't let your geographic location needs limit your job search.

And that was the exact situation I was in for the last 5 months with my former employer. They were based out of Halifax and I worked remotely out of Sudbury. Which is why I thought I was reasonably safe in this round of layoffs. Silly me. About 15 years ago I was the lead developer for the largest automotive site in Canada. They were based out of Mississauga (Toronto) and worked remotely from Sudbury. All deadlines met and coded beyond standard. In fact, I was only ever in the office twice. Once when I was hired and another time for a party when the company was sold.

I guess somewhere in the back of my mind I'd like to semi-retire someday and get out of the high tech area that I've painted myself into a corner in. Being a niche specialist has it's advantages while you are employed, but not so good if ever do you lose it.

Maybe some day I'll get the axe and then be forced into making that life decision. I can really see myself opening up a motorcycle shop. I know way more about customer service than most shops I've been through, and I think I know the secret to success in that business: Keep it small and only accept as much business as you can handle with aplomb.

Very rewarding, at the end of the day you could look at a stack of installed cabinets and take some real pride in your work.

After 8 years of it though, I found my nose would start bleeding every morning and I had a constant sinus headache. Doctor sent me to an ear nose and throat guy, who in turn referred me to an allergy specialist. A couple of rounds of testing and it was determined that I was allergic to 'smell' of red oak. Not the saw dust, the actual component of the wood that produces smell. Seeing how 95% of my work was in red oak I was done for. So I gave up the cabinet making and got into cabinet sales. During this time I was experimenting with using my home computer for doing layouts (this was the mid 80's). I ended up going to work for Sears doing outside sales (home improvements) SOLELY because I could do layouts on MY computer.

I ended up writing some software (which was a hobby of mine) and that turned into another career of computer programming.

Wow. I've not heard of that diagnosis before. Allergic to the smell of red oak... I imagine that was confirmed with a second opinion before you changed jobs, right?

In any case, good luck with that searching. Maybe there's some woodworking thing you could get into without the red oak (not that great of a wood actually, BTW, though the "unwashed" public seems to think so. But I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know) if that kind of thing still appeals to you.

Sorry to hear about your crappy turn of luck. My heart gave out, my ex divorced me during rehab and put my stuff in storage, THEN TI layed me off...I'm now 100% disabled on social security and my FJR has a handicapped plate...well...I found a much better woman, play guitar in a great blues band, sleep 12 hours a day, and still pull good wheelies on the beast...and I dont even have health insurance to replace my pacer/defib...I swear to God I've never been happier in my life...truly man...you are already demonstrating that YOU are a survivor AND have kept that great sense of humor of yours...network and read a little man...and ride...ya dont need to go far either...your good Karma will take care of the rest...and you've always got your fellow loonies here !!!!
