Garaulds ARE curved to match the body shape.
garauld's are very nice. I saw them here

It was while I was admiring those that I realized the bases are different. As shown in these photos:

GenII

So, I will be making spacers to fit the 2006 and newer (2008?) stock FJR mirrors, and threaded/flanged bushing/nuts to replace the existing collars and nuts.

We need a volunteer with a GenII willing to road test the concept.

If you guys think you can trust the opinion of a FNG I will volunteer to test the spacers. I'd just opened up that area to install the dual star heater elements wiring. I pulled off the mirrors to see what it would take to add just this kind of spacer. I'm tired of looking at my elbows also.

I do a 44 mile round trip commute with the bike every day and can do longer trips on the weekend. But the bike does turn into a pumpkin the second week of January when I have to send the seat in to Russell. (production date of 1\20)

If you feel this is enough time and miles for a adequate test, I'm in.

:yahoo: We have a volunteer!!! :clapping:

2lmaker will know they're good when you refuse to return his prototypes!

jet mechanic, thanks for stepping up. You're saving me a lot of time and helping move this along for everyone.

Do you know how to post photos? Would you be willing to learn? Sharing a few photos of the installation would be nice, but there are also a couple of pics you could take right now that would be helpful.

I just realized this morning that my idea to replace the nut with a threaded, flanged collar (with a hex head) probably won't work because the holes in the cowling stay are probably the clearance diameter of the mirror's threaded posts. I don't want you to have to drill out your cowling stay.

Are a couple of photos possible? Is my written description of the potential problem clear?

... nobody I know of has ever complained about mirror shake UNLESS they were using Emgo (or some other Asian knock-off) aftermarket mirrors.
I seem to remember fjrchick writing about mirror vibration, and she's on a '06. Click
Bad quote trimming. I was speaking only of VFR riders with the spacers.

Oops, sorry.

This is the part that got trimmed:

On the VFRs these type of spacers are pretty much SOP, and nobody I know of has ever complained about mirror shake ...
and this is where I got derailed:

Of course the 2nd Gen mirrors are a bit different ...

Did you see Hal's photos in this thread: Skyway light bracket install? It gives an idea of what the stud extensions will have to pass through. AND, his last photo of the studs protruding through the bracket approximates what it looks like under the front subrame....except its almost upside-down and there isn't much room. The nuts are easily reached with a socket and extension, but I don't know how much room there would be for any "extra" tools or customization.

Second to that, I'd hate to have him drill the fairing sub-frame and then, should the spacer idea not work or need to be modified or removed, he'll be left with a drilled out subframe.

Posting pictures will be helpful and a primer can be arranged. Or he could email them to anyone who does post pictures.

Joe2lmaker,

No I haven't posted a picture yet but i am willing to learn. My bike is in the shop right now getting a new ECU, I should get it back tommorrow. I can take all the pictures you want and email them to you. If I have to drill holes in the fairing its not a big deal, I work in a aircraft mx shop and have plenty of putty and paint to make it right. I'm still game.

Where do we start?

Thanks MadMike,

I have a co-worker who does photography on the side and he should be able to set me up with photo bucket.

Yes, I followed that link when you offered it last night. I'm thinking I need a new eye glass prescription.

I can just make out the date and a red circle around something...

kaitsdad, that was a good write up. I can still give you **** over that ****** photo though, right?

Not to worry. I'm a firm believer that all mods should be reversible (when possible).

If I have to drill holes in the fairing its not a big deal,
I have no doubt that if anyone can open up holes in sheetmetal and not screw up the locations, it's an A&P. ;)

Still, I'm trying to avoid that for those who might want to try this in the future.

Where do we start?
I've got this little thing called graduating from college to get out of the way. I've got 3 pretty hefty assignments due next week and then I'm done. That's the main reason I've been copping out on doing my own disassembly on my own bike. But if you don't mind feeding me info, I can work in some time to figure this project out. Then, next week I'll cut and turn the parts.

One nice piece of info would be the dia. and pitch of the threads. (length would be nice too)

Not a problem at all. I'll take additional pictures of the area and email them out to you. You should have them no later than friday afternoon.

With my homemade units installed, there is no more room on the threads for anything thicker. Mine are made of .040 AL....just fits.

OK, I'll bite. What the hell are those things? Clearly the aren't bug deflectors...

Whatever they are they have caused your seat to blow off cause it's on the ground behind yer bike.

To quote radman: "Wings thread"

Yep...Hand WIngs. I've got them on mine, too. Turned to collect wind they direct fresh air across the top of my tankbag. Turned "in", they cause a vacuum that draws warm air up through the fork hole and helps keep me toasty.

See, just under the front of my helmet. I made tab brackets that come off the Skyway light mounts.

Does anyone know of a good source for standoffs?

Fred W had the right idea,

But one way would be to use a "stud extension" like these.
What we need are M6 X 1.0 X 40mm standoffs. I can make them, and I have a source to have them made, but what I would really like is to be able to find 4 quickly and get them in the mail to jet mechanic.

If you are reading this request after December 12, 2007, never mind.

Joe,

Couldn't find the correct stud adapters, but how about threaded rod and coupling nuts? Can always add on some lock nuts to secure everything. I found the correct sizes at metricmcc.com .
